Program to highlight Holtwood Dam

Solanco Historical Society will host a presentation on Saturday, Sept. 21, at the society's archives building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. The free program will begin at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Mark W. Arbogast will present "Construction of McCalls Ferry Dam in the Early 1900s." He will use old postcard views to show the construction of the dam and hydroelectric plant now known as Holtwood. Most of the construction work was done from 1900 to 1910. The talk will include photos of the area before and during construction as well as the construction bridge used to get material and concrete across the almost one half-mile length of the dam. Attendees will also see images of the Little Italy area where the workers lived.

Arbogast is a retired PPL land manager who worked at the Holtwood and Brunner Island power plants. He has an interest in local history and is also a postcard collector.
