Program to highlight Swatara Park

The Lower Swatara Township Historic Preservation Society will present a program about Swatara Park on Thursday, July 20, at 6 p.m. at the Lower Swatara Township Firehouse, 1350 Fulling Mill Road, Middletown. The guest speaker will be Eric "Ric" Farr. His family created and ran the amusement park in Lower Swatara Township.

Don Farr, Ric's grandfather, bought land and created Swatara Park in 1938 as a place for people to swim, and he offered refreshments for sale. In 1953, Swatara Park began evolving into an amusement park as the Farrs added kiddie boats and kiddie swings. Tickets were 5 to 10 cents each.

Attendees will learn about the family history and the 30-year story surrounding Swatara Park. Those with photographs or memories of the park will have an opportunity to share them during the program.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information or if any special accommodations are needed, contact the Lower Swatara Township Historic Preservation Society at 717-944-9891 and leave a message.
