Programs To Highlight Quilt Turnings, Rare Hymnal

Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, has posted upcoming events events.

Local quilt historian Barbara Garrett will facilitate antique quilt turning sessions on Tuesday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Mennonite Life Collections Building.

This event affords an opportunity to view and study 22 quilts from Mennonite Life's collection, including some acquired from the Clarke E. Hess estate in 2019. Participants will also learn about the makers and their world, specifically the fabrics, styles, and patterns unique to the quilts of this region. The same quilts will be shown at each session.

Garrett has researched Pennsylvania German quilts of southeastern Pennsylvania for over 45 years, including Amish and Mennonite designs. In addition to focusing on quilt documentation projects, she has served as a consultant. Garrett co-authored the book "Quilts: The Fabric of Friendship." A queen-size quilt she designed and made of feed-sack fabric became the demonstration quilt on an episode of HGTV's "Simply Quilts." Garrett has presented several study centers at American Quilt Study Group's annual seminars.

Since participants will gather around the quilts, masks and proof of vaccination are required. This event will be audio recorded for archival preservation.

There is a fee to participate. To preregister by Friday, March 18, visit http://bit.ly/mLifeEvents or call 717-393-9745.

Additionally, Mennonite Life will display the only known copy of the 1564 first printed edition of the Ausbund. The oldest Anabaptist hymnal, the Ausbund has been in continuous use for worship since its first printing in 1564, and many Amish communities use it in worship today.

On Monday, March 28, at 7 p.m., Joe Springer, curator of the Mennonite Historical Library in Goshen, Ind., will exhibit the hymnal and discuss the Sammelband style of binding printed hymn pamphlets together, as this Ausbund is part of a Sammelband. During the lecture, Springer will also introduce hymns and other devotional literature that flourished in pamphlet form among Anabaptist groups during the 17th and 18th centuries.

The lecture is free of charge, but preregistration is required by March 18 at http://bit.ly/1564Ausbund. A livestream of the event will be available at http://www.facebook.com/MennoniteLife.

Beyond the lecture, the Ausbund will be available for viewing at the Mennonite Life library on Tuesday, March 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday, March 30, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Admission is free.
