Promise Players will present "Sarah Mae and Her Kinfolk"

This year, the Promise Players theater group will present "Sarah Mae and Her Kinfolk" as its spring musical. Shows will be held at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, Thursdays through Sundays, March 7 to 10 and 14 to 17. The Thursday and Friday shows will be held at 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays will have a 2:30 p.m. matinee and a 7:30 p.m. show, and Sundays will have a 5 p.m. performance to conclude the weekend.

The Promise Players will donate the proceeds from the show to Impact Missions, a nonprofit organization based in Washington Boro that provides housing resources for those in need throughout Lancaster County. Adults may purchase tickets for a suggested minimum donation, and children 12 years old and younger may purchase tickets at a discounted price. Alternatively, children age 12 and under may pay for admission with a canned food item, which the Promise Players will donate to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries' food bank in Quarryville. Doors will open one hour before each performance.

Set in the western hills of North Carolina in the 1930s, "Sarah Mae and Her Kinfolk" tells the tale of an Appalachian family that comes together for a reunion at its old home. Some members of the family travel from their new homes in other parts of the South, and others still reside at the mountainside home. After gathering under the same roof for the first time in many years, the relatives reminisce about days past and discuss the importance of family and faith. The musical will feature popular gospel songs such as "I'll Fly Away" and "Will the Circle Be Unbroken."

The Promise Players last performed "Sarah Mae and Her Kinfolk" nine years ago. This year, the musical will be directed by Tim Strawser, who will also play the role of Uncle Brutus. Although this is the first year Strawser is directing, he has played various parts in the Promise Players' previous iterations of the show. "I really enjoy acting and being somebody else, and I could do that with any theater group. But I love (the Promise Players') community and the message of faith," Strawser said. "The cast gets pretty close in the weeks leading up to the show."

For every production, the Promise Players chooses a local nonprofit to support in addition to the food bank in Quarryville. The group often highlights an organization that is connected to the play in some way; this year, the Promise Players decided to support Impact Missions, as it is based in a rural part of the county that resembles the setting of the story.
