Rockin' on in PV

"We have clubs on Wednesdays," said Jim Ackerman, director at Pequea Valley Intermediate School (PVIS), explaining how the rock band called Into the Mayhem, which is made up of Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) and PVIS students, got its start. "I called (the club) 'Rock Band,' and in the description I told (students), 'It's not the Rock Band video game.'" When eight students showed up to take part in September 2021, Ackerman discovered members of the group could sing, some could play instruments, and those who could not play were willing to learn.

At first, the group practiced once a week, but then the students wanted to play more often, so a lunchtime practice was added. By May of 2022, Into the Mayhem planned and held a concert with a group of PVHS students who had also formed a rock band.

"Both bands did (a total of) 23 songs, and we played the last song together," said Ackerman, who said songs by Nirvana, The Cranberries, Foo Fighters, and Green Day are in Into the Mayhem's repertoire. "They like songs from the '90s," he noted.

When the students moved from PVIS to PVHS in the fall of 2022, five band members would return to PVIS after school twice a week to practice. One member is still a PVIS student. Because Ackerman was taking a course in modern band at Lebanon Valley College (LVC), he had the opportunity to work with students there studying audio music production, and he was able to give members of Into the Mayhem a chance to record in the LVC studios. In November 2022, the students and Ackerman spent a day at LVC recording five songs. Each student received an electronic file of the recordings.

Current group members include singer and guitarist Cam Frank, keyboardists Kyle Flaim and Kendra Blank, RJ Forsythe on bass, drummer Landon Greenawalt, and Nathan Bird, who plays bass, guitar, and drums. All the students expressed enthusiasm about taking part. "It's basically a family," said Frank, adding, "Music brings people together." The members of the group are looking forward to presenting a second concert in May.
