The 12th annual Blood, Sweat, and Tears Run will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, in Mount Gretna. This annual event consists of a 5K, a 5-mile course, and a 10-mile course. Runners and walkers can choose their distance.

There will be a pre-run warmup. All courses will start on Timber Road, which will be closed to traffic, and traverse the rail trail. Only the 10-mile runners will cross a public road. Portable toilets will be available on both the 5- and 10-mile courses.

Door prizes will be awarded, and giveaway drawings will be held for gift baskets, including a romantic getaway, a stock car racing experience, a massage package, a date night package, a golf package, an Amazon fitness tracker, a tool set, a martini-focused basket, and a Hershey board game basket. Ticket holders do not need to be present to win.

Food trucks will be on hand, including new vendor Smoky Flavors BBQ from Lancaster. A bake sale will be held, and anyone interested in contributing baked goods may contact the organization using the form at https://bloodsweatandtearsfivemiler.weebly.com.

CBS meteorologist Tom Russell will serve as master of ceremonies. Russell has served on the board of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

In addition, the Mt. Gretna Fire Company will hold a car show adjacent to the run as a fundraiser for its organization. The fire company will also supply the fire police and portable toilets for the run.

All proceeds from the Blood, Sweat, and Tears Run will benefit the Emily Whitehead Foundation. The central Pennsylvania-based organization is named after Emily Whitehead, who in 2012 became the first child to be treated for cancer using her own re-engineered T cells to fight her leukemia. This highly experimental treatment for Whitehead's leukemia saved her life, and with the help of the foundation, it has received FDA approval and is now used around the world to help save the lives of both children and adults. The foundation continues to fund new and emerging advanced therapies in the fight against pediatric cancer.

Whitehead just finished her first year at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and she continues to attend medical conferences to share her story and inspire others. Her story is told in the documentary "Of Medicine and Miracles" by Academy Award-winning director Ross Kauffman, and she is featured in the new IMAX documentary "Superhuman Body," narrated by Matthew McConaughey.

Once again this year, the Blood, Sweat, and Tears Run is dedicated to the memory of Mike McCauley, an ultramarathon runner who was passionate about ending pediatric cancer.

Online registration will be available through Saturday, Sept. 7, and T-shirts and fanny packs are guaranteed for those who register by this date. Registrations will be accepted on the day of the event, with T-shirts available while supplies last.
