Run, Walk and Honor Mom

On Mother's Day, share your love for Mom by getting active and helping the community at the same time.

The 11th annual Rotary Club of Elizabethtown's Mother's Day 5K will take place on Sunday, May 10, on the grounds of Masonic Village. Race-day registration will open at 1:30 p.m., and the race will begin at 3 p.m. The course will start and end near Veterans Grove on the campus, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown.

The timing of the race is intentional, said organizer Dan Brill, who noted that activities typically wrap up by 4:15 p.m. so families can enjoy the rest of Mother's Day together.

"We just want to celebrate moms on their special day," he shared. "It's always a fun time and a great way to bring the community together."

Prizes will be awarded to the top overall male and female finishers, as well as the top three male and female finishers in seven age brackets: age 14 and under, ages 15 to 19, ages 20 to 29, ages 30 to 39, ages 40 to 49, ages 50 to 59 and age 60 and older.

In addition to the race, attendees can enjoy door prizes, music and snacks. Race tech shirts will be available while supplies last, featuring the names of business sponsors.

Brill also expressed appreciation to Masonic Village for the use of its beautiful grounds.

"While the race is a longtime favorite event, it also comes during a milestone year for the Rotary Club, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary of community service," Brill remarked, adding that the organization has spent the past century working to improve the Elizabethtown area through charitable efforts and local initiatives.

With a motto of "Service Above Self," the group supports a variety of community organizations and efforts throughout northwestern Lancaster County, including projects to benefit students in the Elizabethtown Area School District and GEARS.

Proceeds from the race will help the Rotary Club continue to serve community organizations.

"Families are encouraged to bring children and grandchildren along for the festivities, making it a fun and healthy way to celebrate Mother's Day," Brill said. The course is perfect for walkers or runners and for people of all ages, he added, and people may participate with their mothers, in honor of their mothers or just for fun.

Participants are encouraged to register in advance at http://www.elizabethtownrotary.org/sitepage/mother-s-day-5k-run-walk. Online registration will close at midnight on Sunday, May 3, though race-day registration will also be available. Parking will be readily available near the race start, and signs will direct attendees to designated areas.
