Scouts attend camping event

The Susquehanna District of the Pennsylvania Dutch Council, Scouts BSA, held a Fall Outpost campout from Oct. 18 to 20 at J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation in Newmanstown. The weekend included events or stations throughout the day on Saturday, with a campfire program that evening. Stations were set up and run by the Scouts BSA units, and the Cub Scouts spent the day going from station to station, with a break for lunch. Close to 500 boys, girls, and adults participated in the event.

Stations were geared toward advancement for the Cub Scouts. The stations included fishing, a fitness course, shooting BB guns, making small boats and racing them, kickball, crafts, fire building, and cooking. Cub Scouts could come just for the day Saturday or spend the night, which most did. They practiced setting up their own tent and helped to cook their evening meal. With most Cub packs heavily recruiting new Scouts at the beginning of the school year, the event gave members a chance to get outside with their pack and get to know each other. The older youths also had opportunities to demonstrate leadership by running the stations for the younger Cub Scouts.

The evening program was presented by the Scouts BSA units and Cub packs. It included skits, songs, and other presentations, with a campfire as a backdrop. After the campfire, Cubs headed back to their campsite for a cracker barrel.

The Susquehanna District covers Columbia, Conestoga Valley, Eastern Lancaster County, Hempfield, Lampeter-Strasburg, Lancaster, Manheim Township, Penn Manor, Pequea Valley, and Solanco school districts.
