Seniors luncheon offers food and fellowship

Local senior citizens now have a place to enjoy good food and fellowship as part of a new monthly seniors luncheon program being offered at Penningtonville Presbyterian Church in Atglen.

The event was held for the first time on Jan. 28, and it will continue on the fourth Sunday of each month from noon to 2 p.m. Each gathering will feature a homemade hot meal, followed by an activity or program. The opening meeting featured bingo with small prizes for the winners.

More than 25 seniors attended the first-time event, which included congregation members, as well as people from the community.

Pastor Eric Dorville welcomed those in attendance and offered an opening prayer. "The deacons were discussing that the community needs (a place) for our seniors to come together especially during the cold months," he stated. "This is a place that is warm and (attendees are) able to get a good meal. They can share stories, catch up and be together in fellowship."

The meal, prepared by deacon Donna Norris and served by church volunteers, included salad, homemade baked ziti with bread, iced tea and lemonade. "(For dessert), we had lemon poundcake with whipped cream and blueberries," Norris noted.

She said that the menu will change each month as will the program or presentation. "It may get to the point that they don't want an activity. They just want to sit and talk. We will play that by ear," said Norris.

The luncheon is free and open to people age 62 and over, but donations will be accepted. The next scheduled event will be on Sunday, Feb. 25. Seniors are asked to register in advance by contacting the church at 610-593-2173 or emailing penningtonvillechurch@gmail.com by Wednesday, Feb. 21.
