Showcasing stitches and stories

There is a time of year that Teresa St. Angelo, director of the Winters Heritage House Museum, anticipates annually, and it's coming up soon.

"I get so excited every May, with all the colorful quilts that are displayed," she said of the museum's Quilt Show. "I look forward to hearing the stories every quilter conveys about their treasured work. From the fabrics chosen to the patterns, each quilt is unique and cherished. Sharing these family quilts and stories means so much to me and our staff."

The show will open on Wednesday, May 14, and will run through Friday, June 6, in the historic log homes that make up the museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. The show will be open during museum operating hours, which are Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Guided cabin tours will be offered on Saturdays at 1:30 p.m. by appointment.

"The quilt show celebrates our on-site quilt guild, both their time and their talent," explained Malinda Miller, digital media manager for the museum. "Many of the quilts on display were completed by the quilt guild members. We also recognize the importance quilting plays in this area's history and see it as an important way to contribute to the preservation of the craft."

As Miller shared, quilts are on loan from members of the guild as well as from Elizabethtown-area residents. "There's a mixture of vintage and modern quilts," she said.

Family-friendly activities such as Lincoln Logs, sewing crafts, making a lavender sachet, wooden puzzles, coloring papers and old-fashioned board and yard games will be offered during the show outside at the museum, weather permitting.

The Heritage House has lined up multiple activities throughout the month to complement the quilt show. Local quilt expert Jo Garvin will give a Quilts of Valor presentation on Monday, May 19, at 6 p.m. at the H.U. Coble House, which is part of the museum complex.

"The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor," Miller stated. "Jo Garvin, the Quilts of Valor volunteer group leader for Middletown Piecemakers, will present on the organization's history and present a Quilt of Valor to Elizabethtown resident and Elizabethtown Preservation Associates board of directors member Robin Snyder."

The Heritage House will also host a quilt show experience specifically for homeschool families and co-ops in which students will experience an instructor-led lesson on quilts and then explore self-led activities related to quilting, sewing and other textiles and fiber arts. Programs will be offered on Wednesday, May 21, and Friday, May 23, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

New this year, Brunch and Browse will be held at the H.U. Coble House. The event will feature a buffet provided by The Spot Hometown Deli on Saturday, May 31. The menu will include scrambled eggs, Groff's bacon, potatoes, fruit, beverages and a chef's special. Two seatings will be offered, one between 9 and 10:15 a.m. and one between 11 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Door prizes will be awarded at each seating.

"Fun and family time together inspired me for the brunch offering," St. Angelo remarked. "Brunch at the H.U. Coble House topped off with a view of the beautiful quilts in our cabins and then some time for kids' activities, I thought, would make for a special Saturday together for families and friends. Ed Cunningham from Spot Deli was excited to partner with us for the special offering. His enthusiasm for setting up the brunch at the H.U. Coble House sealed the deal."

Tickets to the brunch will include both the meal and admission to the quilt show and may be purchased at https://bit.ly/brunchandbrowsequilts31 or at the Heritage House during business hours. The last day to order tickets is Thursday, May 29.

Proceeds from the quilt show and brunch will be used for preservation of the historic buildings, heritage crafts and educational outreach of the museum.
