Solanco Inducts Athletics Hall of Famers

Solanco High School held its Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony Sept. 12. This year's class includes one of the past district championship teams, two individual athletes, and a couple who have made their mark in the Solanco area.

Keith and Wanda Wagner were enshrined as friends of Solanco athletics. Keith, a 1973 graduate of Solanco, participated in the school's wrestling program and attended Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) for a career in the food trade. He volunteered as a coach in the elementary wrestling program for five years. Keith organized and coached the middle athletic Junior Olympic team for five years and was an AAU and USE Freestyle, Greco, and Sambo wrestling official for 12 years. During his tenure, he and his family were recognized as officials of the year. Keith has been a truck driver for over 40 years and works for Marlin Nolt Trucking. Over the past 19 years, he and his family have participated in the Make-A-Wish Foundation's Mother's Day convoy, raising over $136,000.

Wanda graduated from Penn Manor in 1974 and also attended LCCTC for distributive education, where she placed third in the state. She was also involved in officiating at the AAU and USA freestyle, Greco, and Sambo wrestling for 12 years. Wanda worked for the Solanco School District as a cafeteria manager at Swift and Clermont elementary schools for 30 years. She is currently retired but still substituting in the district cafeterias when needed. She volunteered to run the football concessions stand for over eight years and has been running the clock for home wrestling matches for 28 years.

Keith and Wanda have five children and 13 grandchildren, all living in the area and supporting Solanco sports through working at events, timing, bookkeeping, and being involved in booster clubs. The Wagners are also members of the Solanco Wrestling Hall of Fame.

The 1968 boys' cross-country team, Lancaster-Lebanon League and district champions, was also inducted. The team members were Richard Brown, Donald C. Funk, Glenn Spangler, Keith Gillespie, Keith Hammel, Charlie Smith, Mark Bradson, Ken Adams, Tom Regan, David Arnsdorf, Ranford Johnson, Steve O'Connell, Michael Osborne, Fred Dings, Roger Steinberg, and Peter Osborne.

Standout basketball player Dylan Hastings was enshrined during the ceremony. Hastings was a four-year varsity starter for the Golden Mules. He was a three-time Lancaster-Lebanon League All-Defensive Team selection, named to the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 2 first team two times, a Lancaster-Lebanon League Senior All-Star Selection in 2017, named to the Lancaster-Lebanon All-Decade second team, and a 2017 Pennsylvania 5A All-State third-team selection.

In 2017, during his senior season, Hastings became the seventh member of the school's 1,000-point club and received a full athletic and academic scholarship to attend Lafayette College.

He received his Bachelor of Arts in anthropology and sociology from Lafayette College in the spring of 2021. As a four-year member of the men's basketball program, Dylan was team captain during the 2020-21 season, contributed to a season of more than 20 wins and a Patriot League semifinals appearance in 2019-20, and is ranked ninth all-time in total blocks at Lafayette College with 70 blocks total. He made the Patriot League academic honor roll in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

Hastings is currently working as a relationship manager at Dakota Funds Group, which is a financial services firm in Philadelphia. He is also the assistant men's basketball coach at Malvern Prep and is engaged to Krista Kissell, whom he met at Lafayette College.

Record-setting track star Billy Cooney was enshrined. Cooney, the Solanco record holder in the 110 hurdles, was a two-time Lancaster-Lebanon League champion in both the 110 and 300 hurdles and captured the district 110 and 300 hurdles titles in 2016. He won a PIAA silver medal in 2016 and was fifth in the state in the 300 hurdles.

Cooney was also a member of the Solanco football team. He attended Thaddeus Stevens College and received a degree in metals fabrication welding technology and graduated in 2019. He participated in the school's track and field team and qualified for the NJCAA Indoor National Championships.

Cooney is currently working as a mechanical engineering technician for the Naval Surface Warfare Center in the Philadelphia Division as a submarine hydraulic mechanic. He enlisted in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard from 2019 to 2025. He was an infantry fire team leader and recently safely returned from a combat deployment in Somalia.

Cooney married his high school sweetheart, Emile Stocker, and they currently reside in Quarryville with their golden retriever, Lewes.
