Speaker To Address James Buchanan's Wheatland

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 15, at the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy. Guest speaker will be Patrick Clarke, who will present "James Buchanan's Retirement at Wheatland."

Clarke is the director of President James Buchanan's Wheatland. He was hired in 2005 as the executive director and CEO for the James Buchanan Foundation and for the preservation of Wheatland.

Today, he guides the preservation, historic collection and interpretation at Wheatland. Through his efforts, more than 47% of the artifacts on display at Wheatland were owned by President Buchanan. Previously, Clarke was executive director and CEO for President Woodrow Wilson's birthplace and museum in Staunton, Va.

Clarke is a graduate of State College in Westfield, Mass., where he received his Bachelor of Arts in history. Clarke received his Master of Science in education from Bank Street College in New York City. Clarke and his wife reside in East Petersburg.

Refreshments and tours of the museum will be available following the program. The meeting is free and open to the public, and donations will be accepted.
