Sportsmen plan activities

Manheim Sportsmen's Association, 552 Oak Tree Road, Manheim, has announced its upcoming activities. For details, visit http://www.manheimsportsmansassoc.org.

The club's indoor archery league will start earlier in 2024 than in past years. Registration will be available on Sunday, Jan. 7, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. and on Monday, Jan. 8, and Wednesday, Jan. 10, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. After registering, archery shooters may practice during the open hours, which will be every Monday and Wednesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. starting Jan. 8; the league will officially start on Sunday, Jan. 14, at 1 p.m. The archery league is open to the public for a fee. Classes will be offered for anyone interested in learning to use handguns. A Defensive Handgun 1 class will be offered on Saturday, Jan. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Introduction to Handguns will take place on Saturday, Jan. 13. Interested individuals may enroll in one or both classes. Topics will include firearm safety, basic parts of a handgun, fundamentals of shooting and range time. Each class will consist of two hours in the classroom and two hours on the indoor range. Classes are open to the public, and there is a fee. Space is limited. The Manheim Central rifle team practices each day after school from 3:15 to 6 p.m. The team travels to other schools for matches and holds several matches at the Manheim Sportsmen's Association's indoor range. No other shooting may take place on the indoor range during these hours, with exceptions for holidays, inclement weather and other circumstances. The club sponsors a local BB gun team, which practices at the club's indoor range each Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. or later. All indoor range activities are closed during the practices.

A block shoot will take place from 1 to 3:30 pm. on Sunday, Jan. 28, and this activity is open to the public. Participants must supply their own equipment, and they may use 12-gauge guns only. The club will supply the shells. There will also be a pie-shooting contest. Winners in the contests will receive cash. Food will be available from noon to 3 p.m.

The annual big game contest will also be held on Jan. 28. Judges will evaluate whitetail deer antlers from Pennsylvania and out of state according to the Boone & Crocket system, Pennsylvania black bears based on the Pennsylvania weight slip, and the length of Pennsylvania turkey beards.
