St. Peter UCC to host Garden Bazaar

In conjunction with its monthly flea market, St. Peter United Church of Christ (UCC) will hold a Garden Bazaar on Saturday, May 13, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Items for sale will include plants, pots and outdoor decor. Homemade baked goods and breakfast and lunch items will also be available to eat in or take out.

The Garden Bazaar will consist of plants donated by church members as well as flowers such as petunias and geraniums. There will also be an assortment of succulents available. "We will have perennials and houseplants, and to supplement, we will buy annuals (that will be for sale)," said church member Marcia Bittner, one of the event organizers. "We will have gently used pots and garden accessories and garden crates that we will paint and decorate."

Bittner noted that this is the third year for the event, which is being held the day before Mother's Day. "For years, we have had a Christmas bazaar, and we thought this is such a nice time of year (and) we should do something in the spring," she said. "We thought we would draw a lot of people who might want to get flowers for their mom. We will also have gifts and a baked (goods) table in case people want to take home desserts for Mother's Day or special treats."

The event will be held rain or shine. In the event of rain, Garden Bazaar items will be displayed in the church pavilion.

In addition to the flea markets, held on the second Saturday of every month, community dinners are offered at the church on the last Friday of each month from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The meal is free, but a collection jar is available on the table where the coffee and desserts are served so that people can donate a freewill offering.

"We serve between 25 and 30 people," noted church member Sharon McFarland. "It's a good thing (for the community), and we feel good doing it."

The food is prepared by church member Paul Baringer. Church volunteers help prepare, serve and clean up after the meal.

McFarland noted that because of the pandemic, the way the meal is served has been changed from buffet style. Instead, people sit at the tables, and church volunteers come and take their orders and then bring their entrees to them.

The next scheduled community dinner will take place on Friday, April 28, and the next flea market will be held on Saturday, June 10.
