A group of students from Twin Valley, Pequea Valley, Ephrata, and Cocalico traveled to Costa Rica from June 22 to July 1. The group traveled with WorldStrides and was accompanied by Costa Rican guide Gustavo Solis, who has led the group for the past three trips. Students benefited from his deep knowledge of Costa Rica's history, wildlife, culture, and people.

At the beginning of their adventure, the students had the opportunity to stand on the rim of the Irazu Volcano, one of the country's active volcanoes. In addition, they embraced Costa Rican culture by learning traditional dances, preparing authentic local dishes, and experiencing how food brings communities together.

Science and nature came alive when students visited CATIE, the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center, where local scientists introduced them to tropical agriculture and sustainable farming practices. They also spent time with members of the Kekoldi and Bribri Indigenous communities, learning about centuries-old traditions and medicinal plants, and even making chocolate from freshly harvested cacao.

In Tortuguero National Park, students navigated rain forest canals by boat, spotting monkeys, sloths, caimans, colorful birds, and other wildlife in one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth. One evening, they witnessed a female leatherback sea turtle emerge from the ocean, lay her eggs on the beach, cover the nest, and return to the sea. Students also challenged themselves by ziplining high above the rain forest canopy at Go Adventure Park and conquered the 500-step hike to the La Fortuna Waterfall. They relaxed in Costa Rica's natural hot springs after days filled with exploration.

The trip also included a visit to a local school. Students connected with peers through conversation, games, and sports; practiced their Spanish; and gained insight into another country's educational system and daily life.

The trip helped students to develop confidence and broaden their perspectives, and they returned home with special memories and a deeper appreciation for the global community.
