Students Fire Artwork In Kiln

Lampeter-Strasburg High School seniors in the Clay III art class recently participated in a community wood firing at the Lancaster Creative Factory. Sofia Bua, Josie Lau, Taya Puffenberger, Kira Thomas, Jasmine Thompson, and Mary Torres spent two weekends loading, firing, and unloading a 74-cubic-foot anagama wood kiln with a 21-cubic-foot salt chamber.

Each student entered about five or six pieces of her own work into the kiln. The students spent a Saturday learning how to load the kiln and then returned the next day to fire the kiln by stoking the fire and monitoring the temperature under the direction of Lampeter-Strasburg High School art teacher Meg Lau and artist Kevin Lehman. The students returned the following Saturday with Meg Lau to unload their work and see the results.
