Students get into character for spring musical

Set in the lively sprawl of mid-20th century New York City, "Guys and Dolls" is an American musical that follows the story of two couples. Sky Masterson, a smooth-talking gambler, is in an improbable relationship with a devout missionary named Sarah Brown. Endearing slacker Nathan Detroit has been engaged to his bubbly fiancee, Miss Adelaide, for several years. As the story unravels via grand musical numbers and classic show tunes, the characters learn more about themselves, each other and where they fit among the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple.

Since rehearsals began in December, the cast members of "Guys and Dolls" have been working hard to prepare for showtime under the guidance of director John Biles, who teaches English language arts at Solanco High School. In addition to memorizing their lines and musical numbers, many cast members have made an effort to truly understand the unique personalities they will bring to life on the stage. "Nathan is the guy who pulls everything together. He's stressed, pulling all the strings, but he makes it work," said sophomore Kenton Green, who will play Nathan Detroit. "I identify with the part of him that's a busybody, so I've been able to fall into the character naturally." Green added that he has been using vocal exercises to achieve a high-pitched and whiny tone for his character.

Due to the main characters' unique personalities, the cast members have faced different challenges as they rehearse. Senior Aidan Todd, who will play Sky Masterson, said he has been researching the part by watching videos from past performances of the show. "Sky is supposed to be the lead, but if you don't play him in an interesting and memorable way, he's not," Todd said. "He's a lot more than just a lucky gambler."

Although some cast members have been able to relate to their characters, other students have embraced the challenge of playing someone whose personality is quite different from their own. Juniors Reese Xander and Quin Wiley, who will portray Sarah Brown and Miss Adelaide, respectively, said they've enjoyed getting into the minds of their characters. "I've heard people say that Sarah Brown is a mean character, but she's just very determined," Xander said.

"I love to play Miss Adelaide because she's so different from who I am. I think that can be the hardest thing, too, to get outside of my own personal self," added Wiley.

Junior Isaac West said he's been preparing for his role as Nathan Detroit's fellow gambler, Nicely Nicely Johnson, by working on his New York City accent and comedic delivery at home - much to his family's chagrin.
