Students honored for good deeds

Four students in Lower Dauphin School District were recently recognized by Lower Dauphin Communities That Care and Hummelstown Police Department for doing the right thing.

Conewago Elementary School fifth-grader Maxwell Vargas saw a second-grader sustain an injury on the bus ride to school. When the bus arrived, Max escorted the younger student to the health room and explained what happened on the bus. School nurse Mitch Ripa nominated Max for the award.

At Lower Dauphin High School, senior Luca Zanni witnessed a younger student get pushed and knocked down. He checked on the student's well-being and then got help for the student. Teacher Michelle Warner nominated him for the award.

Nye Elementary School fourth-grader Gabriela Mata Perez, who entered the school as a first-grader with limited English proficiency, was honored for tutoring a new first-grader at school by helping with homework, translating the lunch menu and helping out in reading class.

Lower Dauphin Middle School eighth-grader Hunter Stoak was spotted in the community helping an elderly stranger down a ramp and walking her to the curb to help her into her car.

The winners were rewarded with a gift card; a Do the Right Thing T-shirt, pencil and certificate; and a restaurant coupon. The recent program sponsors were the Hummelstown Police Officers Association, M&T Band and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

School staff members and police officers typically nominate students whose positive actions come to their attention, but any adult over the age of 18 can nominate a child. A volunteer committee reviews the student nominations on a monthly basis and selects a winner for each month.
