Students Present History Research

St. John Neumann Catholic School (SJNCS) recently held its annual National History Day (NHD) competition, showcasing projects that seventh- and eighth-graders had been working on since the beginning of the school year. The students were required to choose topics relating to this year's theme, "Frontiers in History: People, Places, Ideas." The winners from SJNCS will compete in the regional competition, to be held virtually on Saturday, March 18, at Messiah University.

In the Research Paper category of SJNCS' competition, Gianna Ostroski placed first for her project, "The Birth of Death Camps." Second place went to Joe Sikorski for "The Battle of Gettysburg: The Greatest Victory in U.S. History."

The winners in the Individual Website category included Finn Milligan, first place for "The Invasion of Canada: Setting the Course for American History"; Nora Grignon, second, "The Election of 1801"; and Maria Scott, third, "Transforming Travel on the Transcontinental Railroad." Honorable mentions went to Christina Cropper for "The Progress of Women: The Seneca Falls Convention" and Michael Keyes for "Panama Pandemonium."

Brenden Fletcher's "The Texans Fight for Freedom" was the first-place Individual Documentary, with an honorable mention going to Aidan Klein's "The Mayan Civilization."

In the Individual Exhibit category, the winners included Caitlyn McCuen, first place for "Crossing Frontiers on the Field and on the Sideline"; Sara Reynolds, second, "Gold! Gold! Gold! American Frontier: The California Gold Rush"; and Caitlin Reynolds, third, "Women in WWII." Honorable mentions went to Ava Richter for "The Advancement and Historical Significance of Photography"; Maria Trego, "Who Was the Mother of Modern Nursing: Florence Nightingale"; Tori Elliott, "Ruby's Bridges' Bridge to Desegregation"; Chloe Detz, "Achoo The Flu: The 1918 Influenza Pandemic"; Maggie Pletcher, "The Reconstruction of America"; and Natalie Cellucci, "All Aboard!"
