Support a good cause and enjoy a tasty meal

The Mountville Lions Club will host its annual chicken potpie supper on Saturday, March 16, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 100 W. Main St., Mountville. From 10 a.m. until supplies run out, participants may pick up takeout meals for a set price, as well as various desserts such as pies and cakes.

In addition to the meals, Lions Brooms will be available to purchase during the event. The brooms were previously crafted by those with impaired vision as an auxiliary fundraiser; broom sales continue to benefit the Lions Club, but the brooms are now fashioned by Amish craftsmen in the local community.

The tradition of hosting an annual chicken potpie supper in the fall and spring has been upheld by the Lions Club for over half a century. The fundraising event has remained largely unchanged through the decades, and members of the organization continue to prepare the food using the same community-favorite recipe. Before the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the fundraiser included a dine-in supper with an option to take food to go. The format of the event was altered after the pandemic to only offer a takeout option.

In recent years, the recipe has grown so popular that the Lions Club has completely run out of food early in the day, resulting in extended wait times for patrons. In 2023, club members refined the process of preparing the meals to meet the increasing demand. Volunteers now purchase a higher quantity of supplies for each fundraiser, and they have begun preparing the meals much earlier in the day.

The chicken potpie supper is one of the Lions Club's largest sources of revenue, and it helps the organization fund several community service projects. The club's ventures include offering assistance to community members with visual impairments, funding scholarships for Hempfield High School students and completing miscellaneous service projects in Mountville such as installing wheelchair ramps to make the town more accessible to residents. Last fall, the Lions Club purchased six benches to replace those currently located at local parks and bus stops along Main Street. The old benches were installed by Lions Club members more than 30 years ago, and the organization plans to place the new seats this spring.

"The chicken potpie fundraiser is always well-supported by the community," said Mountville Lions Club member Eric Weaver, who has helped organize the event for over a decade. "We think it's really good potpie, but a lot of people support it because they know it's for a good cause. The Lions Club is a good way to give back to the community and to enjoy fellowship with good people while you're doing it."
