Support global efforts at a chicken barbecue

On Saturday, April 5, you can pick up a delicious meal and support two organizations with a global impact at the same time.

Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, 777 S. Mount Joy St., Elizabethtown, will hold a chicken barbecue from 3 to 5 p.m. on April 5. Meals will be available for pickup at the church portico.

Each meal will consist of a half-chicken prepared by Dennis Peters, a baked potato, homemade baked beans, homemade pepper slaw, a roll, applesauce and homemade cookies. Tickets are not required for the meals, which will be available by donation while supplies last.

The chicken barbecue will support two organizations - the Haiti Medical Project and the Center for Caring, Empowerment and Peace Initiatives (CCEPI).

"The Haiti Medical Project falls under the umbrella of the Church of the Brethren," explained Sandy Brubaker, witness commission member of Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren. "It offers mobile medical clinics for remote villages by Haitian doctors and nurses. The organization also has classes to educate mothers of young children and builds clean water systems and latrines." The organization began after a 2010 earthquake in Haiti that killed an estimated 350,000 people. Its funding is provided in part by grassroots efforts throughout the United States.

CCEPI is a nonprofit organization started by Dr. Rebecca Dali of Nigeria, Brubaker explained.

"Nigeria has been suffering from terrorist attacks, leaving thousands of people displaced, many widows and orphans," Brubaker said. "Dr. Dali provides schooling for widows, teaching them skills to help them provide for their families. She organizes distributions of bulk foods to vulnerable people. Her work has brought relief to more than 2 million people." The organization is in the process of building a medical center to help with needs in the large surrounding area and to offer trauma care and education.

Hosting the chicken barbecue is important to the church members, Brubaker said, because it not only provides funds for the organizations, but it also helps the church connect with people outside its doors.

"The event promotes unity and community for our members as they work together to serve those in our world that are marginalized," Brubaker commented.

She is especially invested in this year's event because of the personal connections between the church and the organizations it is supporting.

"The food in and of itself is very delicious, and our own church members love the event for the food, but also it supports two organizations that are close to our hearts," she said. "Dr. Dali has spoken at our church on numerous occasions, and our congregation has met a Haitian doctor that has worked with the Haiti Medical Project."
