Support Group Available For Cancer Patients, Survivors

Individuals dealing with a cancer diagnosis, as well as cancer survivors, are invited to attend a free workshop at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., Morgantown. The group will meet at 7 p.m. every Thursday for eight weeks beginning on April 28. The workshop will be offered in addition to the regularly scheduled community cancer support group meetings that take place at the church on the third Thursday of each month.

The groups are facilitated by Cheryl Heineman, a three-time cancer survivor who received training for leading the group. Cheryl's husband, the Rev. David Heineman, who is a board-certified hospice chaplain, also offers support and expertise for the group.

"We (will) have different professionals coming to present specific topics as it relates to cancer," said Cheryl when describing the eight-week session. "We get some of that in the regular group, too, but this is a good way to get everyone to meet one another and share their stories and connect with others. It gives continuity, and the group bonds. Then, they can blend in with the once-a-month group."

After the speakers' presentations, there will be a question-and-answer session, followed by a break. "We will reassemble and give updates on our personal treatments, where we are in our journey," said Cheryl. "Some are facing tests and some people are healed and they're rejoicing and some are (terminally ill). What's wonderful is how (everyone) comes alongside (each other) in where they are and encourages one another."

The original support group first met in the midst of the pandemic in July of 2020. The next scheduled session will take place on April 21. "It can be anywhere from three people to eight people (in attendance). One time we had 12 (attendees)," Cheryl noted. "We are trying to reach out because there are a lot more people out there with cancer and could really use the group."

"It's any kind of cancer," she added. "Some cancers are so unique that there will not be a support group for that kind of cancer."

In addition to the regularly scheduled meetings, the group takes part in social events. "We have had picnics and a Christmas party," Cheryl explained. "Every third month, we don't have a program. We meet for dinner at the church and have an informal session."

Cheryl noted that the church has been helpful in providing a space for the support groups to meet. "They offered it freely when I approached them about starting the group. They helped us get started; doors opened wide for us," she shared.

All meetings are free, but occasionally attendees will offer a donation. "We use it for expenses, printing posters and business cards or the meals," Cheryl said, noting that after she spoke about the cancer support group at Hopewell Church in Elverson, the congregation made a donation.

"We offer hope, courage, strength and faith as we walk this journey together," she added. "It's God ministry; it's not David and Cheryl's ministry. We do the footwork and organizing, but we watch God work."
