Swiss Pioneer schedules book auction

When the Swiss Pioneer Preservation Society holds a book auction on Thursday, June 8, at 2:30 p.m. at the Big Spring Farm, 735 Spruce Road, New Holland, several early books will be going up for bids. "We have two books printed at Ephrata Cloister," said Ray Zimmerman, a representative of the nonprofit organization. "One is a song book written in German from 1806, and the other is a 1770 book titled 'Conservation of the Saving Faith.'" The oldest book to be auctioned is a 1630 German Bible printed in Strasburg, Germany.

One unique offering is a number of handwritten scrolls. "This one is scroll No. 9, and it was written by Warren W. Martin of Reinholds," said Zimmerman, pointing to one of the scrolls. "He was married to Anna Hahn."

A total of 818 lots will be sold at the auction. Zimmerman noted that boxed lots including cookbooks will be sold via silent auction.

Readers who have questions about the event may contact Zimmerman at 717-354-7139.
