Talk To Focus On Schutte Company

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) will offer a slideshow on the demise of the Charles Schutte Body Company, Lancaster's hometown automotive coachbuilder, during its meeting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, in Millersville's Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m. Anyone who has not been vaccinated against COVID-19 is asked to wear a mask.

The speaker for the presentation, titled "When the Wheels Came Off," will be Manheim Township resident Bill Rothermel, an automotive historian and freelancer who writes about the vintage automobile hobby. The talk, a follow-up to his 2019 address for the society on the Schutte Company's history, will focus on the success of the Schutte Company and what led to its demise, as well as the exit of Mr. Schutte from Lancaster. Rothermel recently received historical documentation from the attorney who represented Schutte against his company's stockholders, and Rothermel noted that those attending the presentation will be among the first to hear the story. Schutte-bodied cars that still exist also will be discussed before the closing question-and-answer period.

Rothermel is a member of the board of directors of the AACA Museum Inc., Hershey, and a graduate of Shippensburg University. His writing has been featured in Sports Car Market, Old Cars Weekly, Hemmings, and RM Sotheby's auction catalogs. He has served as master of ceremonies and a class judge at various concours.

Although there is no admission charge, donations will be accepted. For more information, call Phil Gerber at 717-872-8837 before 5 p.m. or email him at pge8507@aol.com.
