Tennis Team Captures First-Ever Section Title

The Comet tennis team wrapped up a perfect 6-0 Section One record with a solid 6-1 win at Elizabethtown last Monday and in the process claimed the school's first-ever Section title in boys' tennis.

"This season has been amazing," lauded head coach Amanda Pryzbylkowski. "Before the season, I expected us to be strong in our No.1 through No. 5 spots, but we had three senior athletes join the team this year to really round out our top eight. The entire team has been so excited each and every match and our JV players are very motivated to continue working in the offseason so we can continue our trend of dominating the league and section."

The team is currently ranked #3 (out of 44) in the PIAA District 3 power rankings.

Curtis Rabatin and Maxwell Davis dug deep to win 8-5 at No. 1 doubles while Stefo Billis and PJ Fahey, along with Paul Karpouzis and Nico Mann provided a 3-0 Comet advantage against the Bears.

Rabatin, Billis and Davis all earned straight set singles wins to round out the scoring.

The Comets were coming off a 7-0 victory over Warwick Friday, April 16. It was their third shutout of the season. Rabatin and Billis earned shutout wins in singles play while Tom Hockenberry and Sebastian Bookmiller moved into the doubles lineup and earned an 8-4 win.

GIRLS' LACROSSE

In a game between two teams neck-in-neck in the standings, the Lady Comets dropped a 22-3 result against visiting Lampeter-Strasburg Friday, April 16. Less than 24 hours later, they came out on the wrong side of a 10-7 score against Central York, dropping their record to 5-4 overall.

"L-S is more experienced with a higher number of girls that play year-round," said head coach Anneli Starry. "The score did not reflect what we have accomplished this season."

Keegan Dings, Maddie Weber and Mia Jones all scored second half goals.

Down 3-2 in the first half, the Comets couldn't catch CY after the break. Malayna Kahl and Caity McGough both scored twice while Halie Rineer, Dings and Grace Gerner added one goal each. Mackenzie Nafziger recorded 13 saves.

"I have seen so much improvement in our lacrosse IQ to the point where the girls are starting to pick up things on their own," said Starry. "Our standouts to date are Marie Flinchbaugh and Katie Mackey on defense, Keegan Dings and Maeve Haines in the midfield and Maddie Webber and Malayna Kahl on attack."

SOFTBALL

After a pair of 15-0 shutouts, the Comets hosted Lampeter-Strasburg last Monday in a battle of two undefeated teams. And in a heartbreaker, Manor came out on the wrong side of a 7-5 result.

"I thought it would come down to who hit the most," said head coach Dave Stokes whose squad outhit the Pioneers 8-5. "We gave them too many opportunities."

One of those opportunities was a pitch that Chloe Blantz sent over the fence, clearing the bases and highlighting a 5-run sixth inning and a come-from-behind win for L-S.

The Pioneers struck early, scoring twice in the third but the Comets forged ahead in the bottom of the fourth, plating five runs. Maddie Trout, who finished with two hits on the day, homered to tie the game and Sophia Rineer's base hit plated two more. An error contributed to Manor's fifth and final run.

"Sophia Rineer played a phenomenal game at short," praised Stokes. "And we had a chance in the seventh but struck out twice."

On a cold and chilly Wednesday, the Comets rebounded with a 22-2, four-inning win over Ephrata. Tori Hook, Audrey Patterson, Bria Booth and Kylie Goss all crushed home runs with Goss collecting a grand slam.

VOLLEYBALL

The volleyball team had a solid day at the Koller Classic on Saturday, April 17. The Comets went 5-3 in pool play and lost in the first round of playoffs to Central York, 25-23.

Manor opened with a two-set loss to York Suburban but came back to sweep Northern York (25-14, 25-22) and State College (25-23, 25-23) and split with Dallastown (24-26, 25-23).

"The highlight of the day was hitting .778 as a team against Central York," stated head coach Dustin Hornberger, "with Greyson Schatz leading the team with three kills on three swings in that one set playoff. Riley Walton led with 17 kills on the day and Max Bushong had 23 digs. Wyatt Rohrer spread the offense and got a lot of guys swinging," he added. "He will be key for us as he finds the hot hitters during a match.

"This was the first day we had our entire varsity lineup," noted Hornberger. "We are moving in the right direction."

Last Tuesday, the Comets fell short against Warwick 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-19). William Carson led with eight kills and one block. Walton had one ace and Bushong recorded eight digs.

BOYS' LACROSSE

The Comets slipped to 4-2 over the last week with mixed results. Friday, April 16 they pulled out a 12-8 win over Warwick behind a four goal, one assist effort from Cole Spezialetti. Clayton Hollinger (2a) and Jack Barley chipped in with hat tricks while Erik Hinkle (4a) and Aidan Gerlach each scored once. Eli Warfel and Jack Shipley were credited with assists.

Last Monday the Comets met undefeated Hempfield and came home with a 16-7 defeat. Spezialetti, Hollinger and Warfel (1a) each scored twice. Dylan Keene (1a), Hinkle (2a) and Logan Dittenhafer (1a) also contributed.

TRACK

Despite winning just three events on the track, the Comets pulled out a 78-68 win at CV last Monday.

"The big swing was the first race," said head coach Ben Shober. "The 4x800 (Jeremiah Hetrick, Graham Thomas, Max Kreitzer, Leo Medvedkin) was the difference between a tie and a win. Leo ran a seven second PR where he edged out a tenacious CV runner."

Thomas went on to lead a sweep in the mile with Kaleb Kabakjan and Hetrick and won the 3200 as well.

In the field, Kyle Murr was tops in the high and long jumps and led a sweep in the triple with Dorrien Zimmerman and Hunter Hoffman.

Zimmerman also led a sweep in the javelin with Brayden Clow, who won the discus, and Aaron Eaby.

Jaryd Kleinhaus won the shot, and Drew Lebo was tops in the pole vault.

The girls' meet was even closer as the Comets eked out a 75-74 win on the strength of 11 firsts and five key third places.

"Every third place point would have swung the meet in the other direction," said Shober. "Becky Kramer (800), Alyssa Hean (high jump), Berkeley Perry (shot), Jalyn Clow (javelin) and Jaden Metzler (discus) secured those key points and Rhylee Dean, who cleared her first height of the season with a PR of 5-0, was also clutch. Every point matters."

Jasmin Miller (100, 200) and Anne Bibus (1600, 3200) each won two events and Jordan Schucker led a sweep in the javelin with Alyssa Heagy, who also won the high jump.

Maddie Whited (triple), Clow (discus), and Eden Crisman (pole vault) rounded out the winners.

BASEBALL

The baseball team split results last week, dropping a 6-3 final at L-S on Monday before edging Ephrata 9-8 Wednesday at home.

Manor led 1-0 and 3-2 before L-S pulled away with a four-run fifth. Ethan Adelman was 2-3 with three RBIs.

With the game tied at 8-8, Isaac Braegelmann's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth plated what proved to be the winning run against Ephrata.

Manor's biggest lead was 6-2 after scoring five in the second inning.

Hunter Sipel was 2-4 with three RBI's.
