The Power of Friendship

Compeer Chester County Seeks Volunteers

Compeer Chester County, which pairs trained adult volunteers with individuals in Chester County who are working towards mental health recovery, is currently seeking volunteer friends from the community. "Compeer," which means "peer" or "companion," is designed to help build self-esteem and reduce loneliness in a person dealing with mental health challenges, promoting the person's overall well-being.

Those seeking more information about Compeer as well as prospective volunteers who want to complete an application may visit http://www.mentalhealthpartnerships.org/programs-and-services/compeer.

"The Compeer website has recently undergone a new look, which not only illustrates stories of friendship and hope, but also makes it quite easy to complete a volunteer application - all in one place," said Donna Kueny, program manager.

Kueny explained that Compeer volunteers are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. A volunteer with Compeer Chester County is asked to commit approximately four hours per month to meet with their matched friend, who is referred to the program by a mental health professional. The commitment involves spending time with an adult who is dealing with issues such as social anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The specific times and activities for these meetings are decided by the volunteer and his or her friend. For example, pairs can have coffee, take a walk, go shopping or just enjoy a conversation.

"Volunteering for only four hours a month can dramatically change a life and reduce the stigma of mental illness," said Kueny.

Kueny provided comments from program participants following a recent survey: "It's been an opportunity to make a true difference in two lives - my friend's and my own," and "Compeer is welcoming - friendly people, positive atmosphere, fun activities. I love it!"

In addition to one-on-one interactions, Compeer also provides social outings for its program participants and their friends. In March, Compeer sponsored a bowling outing and pizza party at The Palace in Downingtown. In September, Compeer will host an outdoor picnic.

Compeer Chester County, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2024, is a program of Mental Health Partnerships and an affiliate of Compeer International. The program is funded by the Chester County Department of Mental Health/Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (MH/IDD) and private donations.
