Theater Companies To Produce "Crowns"

Open Stage, a professional theater company in downtown Harrisburg, and Sankofa African American Theatre Company will bring their co-production of "Crowns" to Open Stage's Capital BlueCross Main Stage, 25 N. Court St., Harrisburg.

Performances have been set for 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, June 3 to 24; at 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays, May 28 and June 11, 18, and 25; and at 3 p.m. on Sundays, May 29 and June 5, 19, and 26. The opening night performance on May 28 will feature a reception, and a post-performance lobby talk discussion will be held on June 5.

"Crowns," a gospel musical by Regina Taylor adapted from the book by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry, is the story of a Chicago teenager who is sent to live with her grandmother in South Carolina and finds a connection among a community of resilient African American women in their church hats. Weaving together faith, fashion, and family, "Crowns" is a musical celebration of love and redemption.

"Crowns" was first produced at Open Stage in 2006, and it was so successful that a revival was produced in 2007. Open Stage and Sankofa African American Theatre Company have previously partnered to produce "Akeelah and the Bee" in 2018 and "For Colored Girls ..." in 2019.

"Crowns" is directed by Sankofa African American Theatre Company president and executive artistic director Sharia Benn. The stage manager is Jess Ross, and the vocal director is Cheryl Hawkins. The show's cast includes Paula J. Lewis-Roman, Diane Hetes, Regina Gail Malloy, Breanne Sensenig, Steven Ross, Jasmine Graham, and Latoya Dallas.

Separate ticket costs have been set for regular assigned seating and for students with valid ID. For tickets to "Crowns," visit http://www.openstagehbg.com or call the box office at 717-232-6736.
