Tour To Explore Historical Event

LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, will present a Wheatland Special Subject Tour, "Chief Iron Whip Goes to Washington," on Saturday, Aug. 6. Tours will be available on the half hour, beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing until the last tour at 3 p.m.

In 1857, Ponca tribe Chief Iron Whip traveled 1,400 miles to negotiate a treaty with President James Buchanan. The act marked the first time a Native American chief sat with the president of the United States.

During the upcoming guided tours of Wheatland, attendees will learn about the Buchanan administration's treatment of the visiting Ponca, the administration's relationship with the Native American tribes, and the message that Chief Iron Whip had for the 15th president.

Visitors should note that these tours are not regular general admission tours and are not solely focused on James Buchanan.
