Vietnam Round Table to host guest speakers

The Central Pennsylvania Vietnam Round Table will meet on Thursday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. at Vietnam Veterans of America, Michael J. Novosel MOH Chapter 542, 8000 Derry St., Harrisburg.

Following a brief business meeting, there will be two speakers, Doug and Debby Moore from Haymarket, Va., who will discuss their experiences in Vietnam. Doug was a medevac pilot and Debby ran recreation centers for enlisted personnel. Doug wrote a book titled "A Bullet Through the Helmet, A Vietnam Pilot's Memoir."

During Doug's two tours, he flew 1,874 combat missions, evacuating more than 2,700 patients and piloting the aircraft that recovered three POWs who were released by the North Vietnamese. Doug was a ROTC graduate from Arkansas State University in 1959. During his first tour from 1964 to 1965, he served with the 57th Medical Detachment, out of Saigon. During his second tour from 1968 to 1969, he commanded the 159th Medical Detachment at Cu Chi, supporting the 25th Infantry.

Following Vietnam, he commanded a battalion of the 82nd Airborne and a brigade at Fort Lewis, Wash., where he was involved in evacuations following the Mount St. Helens eruption in May 1980. He retired from active service in 1989 as a full colonel serving as executive officer for the Army's Surgeon General.

After retirement, he was inducted into the Dust Off Hall of Fame, the Army Aviation Association of America Hall of Fame and the ROTC Hall of Fame. During his 30-year service to the United States, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, two awards of the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and 33 awards of the Air Medal, among others.

Debby graduated from San Francisco State University. Just before graduation, she learned of the Army's Special Services Program, which employed women college graduates to run recreation centers for enlisted personnel. At 21, she became the youngest woman to run a center in Vietnam. She did two tours, serving first at Soc Trang, then Cu Chi, Phi Tai and Dong Tam. Following her service, she ran recreation services for the city of Las Altos, Calif. Debby and Doug first met in 1969 and then again 45 years later in Washington, D.C.

The meeting is open to the public, and donations will be accepted. All those interested in the history of the Vietnam War are invited to attend.
