VisionCorps Offers Eye Exams, Sets Expo

VisionCorps, a nonprofit organization that offers support to people with visual impairments, suggests that the start of the new school year is also a good time for parents to get their children's eyes checked as well as their own. For those who qualify, VisionCorps can help through an ongoing program that provides free eye exams and glasses to adults and children in Chester County.

The program connects low-income individuals and families with participating doctors. Participants receive free vision examinations and basic frames and lenses.

"You get a voucher and (a list of) eye doctors," explained Carol Gifford, VisionCorps community relations specialist. "We have several participating doctors throughout Chester County."

The program, which is one of several ongoing services that VisionCorps provides, is administered by the Pennsylvania Vision Foundation. "They do the setup, and we administer the program in our area," said Gifford. "All ages are eligible to participate in the program. It's a good resource. It's the basics - an eye exam and eyeglasses. You get a good pair of eyeglasses with some choices."

Gifford noted that families with income limitations may find it necessary to forgo basic eye care. "When you are worried about money, people may view (eye care) as an 'extra.' It's not an extra; it is saving your sight," she stated.

Individuals who are interested in the program or want to see if they qualify are asked to contact VisionCorps at 717-205-4141.

In addition, Chester County residents are invited to attend a free Low Vision Expo on Friday, Aug. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Brandywine Grace Church, 40 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Downingtown.

The expo is geared toward individuals who have low vision as well as their caregivers and family members. "There will be a lot of resource tables at this event in addition to eye care information," said Gifford. "We will have providers from different companies with devices and technology that people can try. There are options and resources for (people with low vision)."

VisionCorps, which was established in Lancaster County in 1926, opened a branch in Chester County about eight years ago. The organization also serves Adams, Lebanon and York counties.

VisionCorps provides instruction to those with visual impairments on how to manage the challenges of everyday life. It also offers sight loss support groups and provides education and prevention-of-blindness services, rehabilitation and employment. VisionCorps serves clients ranging from birth to seniors.

In addition, VisionCorps offers both in-person and virtual programs to organizations and employers about its services. The programs may include information on common eye conditions, living with low vision and employing people with low vision.

All the programs are free of charge, and services offered to clients of VisionCorps are also free.
