Volleyball team competes, aids community

The Garden Spot girls' volleyball team supported breast cancer awareness during its match against Warwick on Oct. 3. Before the match started, the team presented pink roses to spectators who had been affected by the disease. In addition, the booster club sold Pink Out T-shirts and hosted a bake sale. More than $580 was raised and donated to the PA Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC) in Lebanon. On the court, both the varsity and junior varsity teams swept Warwick in three sets.

The PBCC was founded in 1993 and has contributed $5.5 million to breast cancer research. The organization also sends free Friends Like Me care packages to newly diagnosed women. More information can be found at http://www.pabreastcancer.org.

On Oct. 4, the volleyball team volunteered at CrossNet Ministries in New Holland to help sort coats and clothing from a recent winter coat drive. This was the second time the team supported CrossNet. Before school began, the team helped to fill backpacks with school supplies. Opportunities to support CrossNet can be found at http://www.elancocross.org.

The varsity team finished its season with an overall record of 16-6, compiling a league/section record of 11-1 and capturing the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 2 Championship. The varsity girls earned the second seed ranking heading into PIAA District 3 playoffs. The team finished fourth in district playoffs, completing its season just shy of qualifying for the PIAA State Volleyball Tournament.

The junior varsity team finished the season with an overall record of 17-1.

The team members acknowledged the support they received this season from their families, the GS Student Section, and the community. Mya Paparo's father, Sean, announced the lineups and pumped up the crowd before each match. Various local businesses sponsored the team, and Nick Smucker of SMKR Graphic Design and Photography captured many memories this season.
