Volunteers needed for cleanup event

The Manheim Township Sustainability Advisory Committee is seeking volunteers for its spring litter cleanup event on Saturday, April 6, from 10 a.m. to noon. The event will be held rain or shine.

The committee is hosting the roadway and stream cleanup at its Adopt-A-Highway location along Oregon Pike near Oregon Dairy. Volunteers will tidy up an impaired stream that is part of the Lower Conestoga River Watershed as well as the stretch of road from Compost Park to Creek Road.

Those looking to join the cleanup event should meet at the underpass where Oregon Pike, Jake Landis Road, and Route 222 intersect. Participants should park as far onto the shoulder as possible.

Volunteers of all ages are encouraged and welcome to participate, but minors under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Because much of the cleanup is along Oregon Pike, any chaperoned volunteers under the age of 13 will be assigned to the stream portion of the cleanup.

For more information or to volunteer for the cleanup event, contact Ryan Dodson at ryandodson17601@gmail.com or call 717-475-0195.

Participants are also reminded that they will be traversing soggy, uneven terrain in dense thickets of foliage, as well as the wide shoulder of Oregon Pike. Closed-toe shoes and long pants are highly recommended attire for the event. Participants should also anticipate crawling through heavy brush and possible contact with ticks and poison ivy, as well as getting wet and muddy. Attendees should bring a water bottle. Garbage bags, gloves and safety jackets will be provided.
