Volunteers sought for workday

In support of monarch butterflies and pollinators, the first big workday of the 2023 season will be held at the Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Conservation Area, located along Cocoa Avenue in Hershey, on Saturday, May 6, from 9 a.m. to noon. Everyone in the community is invited to participate. To register, visit https://tinyurl.com/pollinatorgardenworkdays.

Two types of workers are needed - those who will reclaim specific plots over the course of the season and those who can only work on supportive projects from time to time during periodic workdays. The group will primarily work north of the drainage ditch in the newer area.

Rainwater will be available in the tanks, along with wood chips that will be used for covering the paths. Volunteers will also work on mulching the plots around the plants.

Attendees should bring their own water to drink, preferably in a reusable bottle; work gloves, shovels and other tools; a wheelbarrow if they have one; and insect repellent as needed.

The Derry Environmental Action Committee (DEAC) hosts this project with support from the Hershey Trust. After the initial workday, DEAC will hold group workdays every two weeks at the conservation area on Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. All are welcome to help on any of those occasions.
