Program to explore foraging, vinegar-making

Horn Farm Center, 4945 Horn Road, York, will host a Late Winter Foraging Walk on Sunday, March 10, from 10 a.m. to noon. Beginners and experienced foragers are welcome.

Attendees will learn how to find and gather wild food and medicine, with an emphasis on ethical foraging and ways of giving back to the land from which materials are taken. In March, foragers may find rosehips, chickweed, burdock root, and cattail rhizomes.

Attendees should dress for the weather and be prepared for walking on uneven terrain and in potentially snowy or muddy conditions.

There is a fee. Young children accompanying an adult may attend free of charge. Preregistration is required at https://hornfarmcenter.org; look under "Programs & Events" for "Classes & Workshops."

Additionally, "The Art of Apple Cider Vinegar" will be offered on Saturday, March 2, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Participants will gather in the summer kitchen to explore an eco-friendly way to turn apple cores and peels into a valuable culinary elixir. Topics will include the science and uses of vinegar and ingredients and materials that can be used to create vinegar safely at home. Attendees will gain hands-on experience in the fermentation process as the instructor leads them through detailed, step-by-step instructions. By the end of the class, participants will take home a jar of the beginnings of homemade apple cider vinegar. Fermented foods contain live bacteria and probiotics and may be consumed at one's discretion.

Attendees should wear closed-toe shoes, tie their hair back or wear a hat, and bring an apron if they have one.

Space is limited. Preregistration is required at the aforementioned website; look under "Programs & Events" for "Classes & Workshops" and "Kitchen and Craft."
