Ware Center to showcase dance, art, and more

The Arts at Millersville University will present Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana's "Quinto Elemento" on Thursday, April 3, at 7:30 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

"Quinto Elemento" ("Fifth Element") is a new work choreographed by Patricia Guerrero, acclaimed flamenco dancer, choreographer, and winner of the 2021 Spanish Ministry of Culture's National Dance Award. Through the buleria, a festive style of flamenco, Guerrero explores the fifth element of the Earth: ether, the essence that makes up the space around everything. Set to original music by Francis Gomez and performed by live musicians, "Quinto Elemento" draws on traditional flamenco structure and deconstructs its rules. Carlota Santana originally commissioned Grammy Award-winning musician Jose Luis de la Paz to create the original score for "Quinto Elemento" before de la Paz's death.

Events at the Ware Center are also planned for First Friday, April 4.

The MU Tell School of Music Student Showcase will take place at 6:30 p.m. in Steinman Hall. The program will begin with a showing of the award-winning music video "Jolakoetturinn (Icelandic Yule Cat)," a collaborative effort between the music business technology program at MU and a team of musicians and filmmakers from production company In the Wee Hours. A group of students who were involved in making the video, from recording and producing the song to filming the music video during a trip to Iceland, will hold a question-and-answer session about their experiences after the video is shown. Performances from two Millersville University student bands, Barkley Cove and The A440s, will round out the evening.

The event will also feature the opening of a new gallery exhibit by Millersville University Art & Design faculty. From 6 to 8 p.m. in the Regitz Gallery, there will be a reception to celebrate the opening of "Exhibition," a showcase of the recent artworks of faculty members in the art and design department at MU. The department's studio offerings include ceramics, metals and jewelry, sculpture, painting, graphic and interactive design, photography, printmaking, and drawing. The exhibit will be on display until Friday, April 25.

The First Friday activities are free and open to the public. No tickets are required.
