Windborne Plans Virtual Concert

The Susquehanna Folk Music Society will present an online concert featuring the a cappella group Windborne on Sunday, Jan. 24, at 7:30 p.m. Preceding the concert will be an online community sing from 4 to 5 p.m.

Windborne, a quartet of young singers from New England, reflects the singing traditions of Eastern Europe and North America. Concert programs include songs from Corsica, the Republic of Georgia, Bulgaria, Quebec, and the Basque country, as well as traditional and original American folk music.

The Windborne singers grew up immersed in the traditional song and dance communities of New England and discovered a love of world folk music in their teens. Over the past decade, Windborne has sought out masters of traditional singing styles in the U.S. and around the world to study a variety of vocal music. The group specializes in close harmony singing.

Participants attending the community sing via Zoom will learn a selection of songs from Windborne's "Song on the Times" songbook. Members of the quartet will discuss each song's origins and encourage conversation about the content of the song and how it may be meaningful in the current times. With participants muted, singers of all levels can join in from the comfort of their home.

Windborne's livestreamed concert will incorporate stories and notes about the traditions from which the group's songs spring.

The community sing is free, and there is a requested donation for the concert. Registration at http://www.susquehannafolk.org is required to attend.
