World Labyrinth Day event set

The 15th annual World Labyrinth Day, sponsored by The Labyrinth Society and its partners, will occur on May 6. The day will offer opportunities for meditations for peace and celebration of the labyrinth experience.

Carmel Stabley, vice president of community for The Labyrinth Society, together with St. Thomas Episcopal Church, will host a free community walk on May 6 from noon to 2 p.m., rain or shine. The event will take place at the outdoor labyrinth located at the church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster.

No experience is necessary, and the activity is open to people of all ages and physical abilities. Attendees may bring a chair, water, snacks and a journal. Donations of canned or dry food will be collected for a local food bank, and donations for the upkeep of the labyrinth will be accepted. People may sign up by emailing labyrinthconnections@gmail.com; walk-ins are also welcome.

Labyrinths are found throughout the world, with the oldest dating back thousands of years. In contemporary use, labyrinths provide an opportunity for activities such as personal reflection and spiritual practice in various public and private settings. Over 6,000 labyrinths are listed at http://www.labyrinthlocator.com.

On World Labyrinth Day, people will engage in individual walks, local community celebrations and worldwide connections through online events and social media. Some participants will take part in the "Walk as One at 1" activity by walking a labyrinth at 1 p.m. local time to create a continuous event passing from one time zone to the next around the globe.

Labyrinth walkers may also choose to participate in the third annual Big Connection research project, a global humanity research experiment asking the question, "What is the impact of walking labyrinths collectively with heart-centered intention and the impact that it has for ourselves and our planet?" This year, the researchers are further exploring the process of labyrinth activism - a term that emerged from the prior studies in 2021 and 2022 - and how to initiate it. The first World Labyrinth Day was celebrated in 2009. The Labyrinth Society Global Group on Facebook, created in tandem with World Labyrinth Day, has since grown to over 15,000 members from 100 countries.

The Labyrinth Society is a U.S.-based international nonprofit organization founded in 1998 whose mission is to support all those who create, maintain, and use labyrinths and to serve the global community by providing education, networking, and opportunities to experience transformation.
