World War II Roundtable To Meet

The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable will meet on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 433 E. Main St., Hummelstown. The guest speaker will be World War II veteran Harold Angle, 99.

Angle, from Chambersburg, spent Christmas 1944 on a troop ship crossing the Atlantic, eluding German U-boats. Landing in France, he joined up with Pennsylvania's 28th Infantry Division in the fierce fighting around Colmar, in eastern France, near the German border. In just four months of combat, Angle was struck by a bullet, survived a grenade, and dodged attacks from 88 mm cannon fire and Nebelwerfer rocket launchers, and then he contracted scarlet fever. While recuperating in Paris, Angle witnessed the city's celebration on May 8, 1945, V-E Day. Angle was next transferred to the United States Army Air Corps with Air Transport Command, where he assisted with review of the strategic bombing campaign in the Pacific Theater. After his discharge in 1946, he returned to Chambersburg, managing and expanding several family businesses until his retirement at age 88.

The meeting is open to the public, and no registration is required. For more information, visit http://www.centralpaww2roundtable.org.
