Wreath-Laying Ceremony Planned

A Wreaths Across America ceremony will be held at Mount Bethel Cemetery, 700 Locust St., Columbia, on National Wreaths Across America Day, Saturday, Dec. 17, at noon. Mount Bethel Cemetery is the final resting place of more than 680 veterans who served in conflicts ranging from the Revolutionary War to the Vietnam War.

Mayor Leo Lutz will lead the ceremony, and Raymond Wallace, a World War II veteran who served in the 82nd Airborne, will represent POWs. The ceremony will conclude with the playing of taps and the laying of wreaths. Every branch of the military will be recognized.

The mission of Wreaths Across America is to remember and honor veterans and teach others about them. Last year, ceremonies were held across the country at more than 3,100 locations, where a total of 2.4 million wreaths were placed for interred veterans.
