Youth, Pre-College Art Classes Planned

Tthe Center for Creative Exploration (CCE) at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D), 204 N. Prince St., Lancaster, will host youth and pre-college classes this summer.

Over three weeks in July, beginning on Monday, July 12, the CCE will host dozens of weeklong, in-person youth art classes. Students in grades one to nine can take morning, noon, and afternoon classes, choosing from a variety of offerings in each timeslot. The daily schedule allows time for supervised lunches and snack breaks on campus between classes. This year, classes will return to an in-person format.

Apart from foundational classes in painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking, this summer features a number of new classes on more specific topics, such as Animal Specimen Drawing, Urban and Public Art, Tabletop Game Design, Creating Art in Photoshop, and Exploring Cultures Through Craft.

To better help parents balance work with their children's time in camp, CCE has partnered with co-working space The Candy Factory, Warehouse D, 342 N. Queen St., Lancaster, to offer a discounted weekly rate for adults with children in art classes. Parents are invited to drop their children off for camp in the morning, walk or drive two blocks to The Candy Factory to work, and then pick their children up when classes end.

The pre-college courses are designed for students in ninth through 12th grades, allowing them to earn college credit. The two-week intensive classes with professional artists and faculty will be offered on campus or online or via a hybrid option. Classes will begin on July 12 and will run in two consecutive two-week sessions, finishing by Friday, Aug. 6.

Among the pre-college options are foundational classes in figure drawing, observational painting, color theory, 3D modeling in Autodesk Maya, and portfolio preparation. Other pre-college classes focus on graphic design/visual branding, concept art, digital painting in Adobe Photoshop, video production, creative writing, introduction and advanced 2D animation in Adobe Animate, and printmaking.
