Youth summer program to benefit from Rotary festival

Lancaster Airport, 500 Airport Road, Lititz, will again be the site of the Rotary Club of Lancaster's Wheels & Wings Festival and 5K. The sixth annual event will take place on Saturday, June 24, rain or shine, and will include a classic car show, an aircraft fly-in, and a 5K race.

The festival will begin with the 5K race at 7:30 a.m. The lightly traveled race route is entirely on the roads of the 5K host sponsor, Brethren Village. Medals will be awarded for the top three male and female finishers in six age categories, with registered participants receiving a race T-shirt.

The "everything on wheels" car show, sponsored by Boyd Wilson, and the fly-in will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A Pre-Show Coffee Cruise - a self-guided cruise designed by Michael Rowen of Michael's Motor Cars - will depart at 7:30 a.m. Show trophies will be awarded, as well as numerous door prizes.

New this year, the festival's airshow will include a World War II-era warbirds showcase, with rides provided by the Capital Wing of the Commemorative Air Force and sponsored by Liberty Financial Strategies. Advance reservations are recommended and can be booked at http://www.capitalwingwarbirdrides.org.

The festival will also feature food trucks, participation of Big Dog Craft Brewing, music by Baker Event Company, inflatable obstacle and bounce houses and giveaway drawing prizes.

The event is free, and no registration is required for spectators. On-site parking will be available for a fee. To register for the 5K and for event tickets, visit http://www.lancasterrotary.org/wheels-wings-and-5k/.

The festival is the Rotary Club of Lancaster's primary annual fundraiser, and proceeds go toward the Summer Youth Experience. Funded in partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, this summer program supports more than 2,600 city youths ages 5 to 16. The program encourages students' summer acceleration through project-based learning, social-emotional development and out-of-school environments. The programs are structured to help Lancaster youths learn and grow through enrichment, including opportunities focused on science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM).
