Bears Trounce Lebanon Cedars on the Mats
Thanks to the balmy weather currently hanging around Central Pennsylvania it may not feel like winter but rest assured, it is. That means the high school sports scene moves inside to gymnasiums, natatoriums, bowling alleys and gun ranges.
For the wrestling team the 2022-2023 season has seen five regular dual meets as well as trips to Donegal and Governor Mifflin for holiday tournaments held at each school. The Bears rock a 4-1 mark in those dual matches with the lone setback coming via a 45-27 final in a season opening loss to Bishop McDevitt on December 10th. E-town followed with wins over Lampeter-Strasburg (56-12), Garden Spot (44-30), Cocalico (48-23) and most recently Lebanon.
The 66-12 win over the Cedars went down January 4th with E-town claiming five wins and nearly half of their points via forfeits. Dakota Petrosky (133), Kai Laszakovits (139), Nathan Thomas (145), Devin Forney (172) and Collin Huggins (189) enjoyed those easy wins.
Add in pinfall wins by Conner Miller (107), Hayden Best (114), Francis Burke (121), Austin Reitmeyer (127), Ryan Findley (152) and Brad Candy (215) as well as losses at 160 and 285 and you end up with Elizabethtown's 66-12 victory.
The Bears have enjoyed success in those holiday tournaments, nabbing silver at the Donegal tournament on December 17th and bronze at the Governor Mifflin Holiday Tournament on December 29th with a combined 14 podium trips. Seven of those trips came in the Donegal Holiday Tournament with Findlay capturing gold at 152. Aiden Robinson enjoyed the top podium finish at the Governor Mifflin tournament, taking silver at 160.
BOWLING
The bowling team opened their 2022-2023 season on the wrong side of a 4-3 final, dropping the match to Penn Manor. The Bears rebounded nicely with wins over Conestoga Valley, Lebanon, Hempfield, Warwick, Northern Lebanon and Cedar Crest leaving E-town with a 39-11 record.
BOYS' BASKETBALL
On the hardwood, the boys' basketball team opened with a title run at the Boiling Springs Tip-Off Tournament, topping Boiling Springs and New Oxford to earn the title. The Bears hit a rough patch from there, dropping games to Dallastown, Manheim Township, Lampeter-Strasburg and Manheim Central to slip to 2-4. Wins over Penn Manor and Garden Spot pushed Elizabethtown back to even, but it was temporary. Losses to Hempfield and Central York in Hempfield's Holiday Tournament coupled with a 61-47 setback to Warwick on January 3rd, have the Bears sitting at 4-7 overall and 2-1 in L-L action. Brenden Lehman (12 points) and Brandon Andrews (11 points) were the lone Bears in double digits opposite Warwick.
GIRLS' BASKETBALL
The Lady Bears have found the going rough with a season opening win over Donegal coupled with a 49-26 victory over Garden Spot as the only wins, leaving Elizabethtown 2-8 overall and 1-2 in L-L play.
E-town followed the win over Donegal with a loss to Red Land in the championship game of their own tip-off tourney with Dallastown, Manheim Township, Manheim Central, and Penn Manor all picking up wins over the Lady Bears. Elizabethtown broke up their five-game slide with the victory over Garden Spot on December 21st but fell right back down with losses to Lower Dauphin and Harrisburg in the LD Holiday Tournament.
The Lady Bears returned to the L-L to kick off 2023, falling to Warwick on the 3rd by a 40-16 final. The scoring was split between three players with Taryn Hummer netting a team high eight. Chloe Wilkinson added seven points while Jadyn Lloyd accounted for the final point.
SWIMMING
The Elizabethtown swimming teams stumbled out of the gate with the boys falling to Warwick 127-49 while the girls dropped a 123-60 final. Both sides rebounded nicely with the boys' team blowing by McCaskey 128-26 and Lower Dauphin 122-46 with the Lady Bears posting a 119-47 win over McCaskey and a 123-46 win over Lower Dauphin.
RIFLE
The rifle team sits at 2-2 heading into the 2023 stretch of their schedule. The Bears opened with wins over Governor Mifflin (494-490) and Ephrata (496-494) but dropped matches to Manheim Central (495-494) and Garden Spot (494-492).
