Buckskins Pull Away From Spot, Win 38-23
The Buckskins did not just visit the endzone in all four quarters of their 38-23 triumph over Garden Spot on September 3rd, they also owned all 24 points scored in the second half as they pulled away.
CV junior Nicholas Tran ran in CV's first two touchdowns to keep things tight, but it was Garden Spot who held the halftime lead, 23-14.
After some halftime adjustments, CV produced an unanswered 17-0 Buckskin run in the third.
Jaiyell Plowden was the receiver on both third quarter touchdown passes, 26-yards and 55 yards respectively, from quarterback Macoy Kneisley, who threw nine completions for a total of 231 yards.
Kicker Jaden Walker added a 34-yard field goal as well as a five-for-five PAT performance.
A third running touchdown for Tran in the fourth was simply the icing on the cake in the first home field success of the 2021 season.
The victory put CV's record at 1-1 after a 16-12 loss at Penn Manor on August 27th.
TENNIS
CV girls' tennis is already six matches deep into their 2021 schedule, leaving them with a split 3-3 overall record, in addition to achieving success in their first league contest, a 6-1 win over McCaskey last Tuesday.
Jenna Rychener took her No. One singles victory in straight sets (6-0, 6-3) marking her fifth singles win this year, while sister Megan Rychener battled to a tiebreaker win (3-6, 6-1, 10-6). Savanna Burkholder made quick work of her opponent, giving up just one game (6-1, 6-0).
Sweeping the doubles portion of the match, the Rychener sisters pulled ahead 8-6, Keyshla Baez and Burkholder cruised to an 8-0 win, and Nicole Fidler and Ella Turoczi won 8-3.
J. Rychener was a bright spot during an early season loss to Manheim Central (6-1) supplying the squad a singles win when she defeated her Central opponent 11-9 in a tiebreaking third set.
On September 2, the entire Buckskin club celebrated success, blanking Garden Spot 7-0.
J. Rychener, Baez, M. Rychener, and Burkholder each contributed both a singles and doubles victory, and a duo of Nicole Fidler and Ella Turoczi completed the sweep.
The club's tightest contest thus far this season tipped 4-3 in favor of Lampeter-Strasburg on August 30. J. Rychener and Baez overcame their singles opponents, and the Rychener sister duo picked up one of their four wins at doubles.
FIELD HOCKEY
Last Wednesday the Lady Bucks blanked Elizabethtown 4-0 to secure their first tally in the win column in 2021.
After a scoreless first period, the CV offense was relentless in the second quarter with two goals coming from Alaina Culbert and one from Olivia Hess. Mikyla Rineer chipped in an additional CV point in the fourth and Sophia Livingston supplied an assist.
Hershey handed CV their first field hockey loss in a 2-1 showdown on September 3rd.
The Trojans struck first with a goal in the second period, but in the third quarter Ellie Hershey netted CV's equalizing goal on an assist dished by Lillian Buckwalter.
In overtime, the Trojans regained the upper hand and sealed the contest, outshooting the Bucks overall 16-10. Buckskin keeper Allyson Stauffer snatched up 14 saves in the nonleague season opener.
VOLLEYBALL
The Lady Bucks took a trip to Penn Manor last Tuesday and outlasted the Comets 3-2 in a hard fought five set contest (26-24, 25-13, 17-25, 10-25, 15-7).
CV clinched the first two sets with the offensive surge led by Becca Hartranft (12 kills), and Summer Getz (24 assists, 4 aces), but Penn Manor fired back taking the next two games and forcing a fifth. Recapturing their early contest momentum, the Lady Bucks ran away with the final game 15-7 to settle the match.
Defensively, Emily Kornacki led the squad with 14 digs and Camdyn Mahler's four blocks provided the Bucks with the boost they needed.
BOYS SOCCER
On Wednesday, the Bucks boys' soccer team finally got to kick off the 2021 season, and did so with a 4-0 win while hosting Cedar Crest.
Braxton Blessing, Ashton Herr, Nate Showvaker, and Rowan Aisenbrey each netted a CV goal with assists coming from Caden Bredeman, Caden Wanger, Blessing, and Tyler Scheetz.
GOLF
Last Tuesday CV took fourth in a five-way matchup held at Meadia Heights, with a 400-stroke team total that bested Manheim Central's 419.
Frontrunners Elizabethtown and Solanco produced matching team scores of 365 while Garden Spot settled in third with a 385 total.
Carson Hoover carded the Buckskin's best score of the day with a 94, and CV's next two efforts were supplied by Miles Jackson and Nate Kirchner with identical 97s.
CV also came in fourth in a mid-August six team match held at Iron Valley Golf Club, carding a 392 team total to outrank Ephrata (432) and Manheim Central (439), while coming in behind Solanco (365), Elizabethtown (366), and Garden Spot (380).
Kirchner's 92 stroke effort led the Buckskin cause, supported by Jackson and Luke Landis with 96 and 98, respectively.
GIRLS' SOCCER
After a 1-0 loss to Exeter on the road to begin their 2021 schedule, the Lady Bucks soccer team looked to improve on that performance during last Wednesday's trip to Cedar Crest and came away with a 0-0 draw. With a heavy lineup of league competition in upcoming weeks the Lady Bucks will look to gain quite a few tallies in the win column.
CROSS COUNTRY
Both boys' and girls' cross country experienced a collective loss in a dual meet while hosting Hempfield last Tuesday, but several CV standouts were highlights of the event.
CV's Emmanuel Gitonga placed second with a time of 17:31 to lead the Buckskin effort for the boys. Tyler Slingluff's time of 18:38 and Timothy Gitonga's 19:38 earned 11th and 12th place honors.
In the girls' race, Kylynn Frankford had the swiftest time with a fourth-place finish clocking a 24:05.
Seana Dougherty (24:20) claimed sixth and Kylee Antrim (25:22) and Abigail Phillips (25:26) crossed back-to-back to take 10th and 11th respectively.
