CV Hoopsters Sit at 4-5 Overall
Thanks to the balmy weather currently hanging around Central Pennsylvania it may not feel like winter, but rest assured, it is. That means the high school sports scene moves inside to gymnasiums, natatoriums, bowling alleys and gun ranges.
BOYS' BASKETBALL
The boy's hoopsters are only nine games deep into their season and sport a 4-5 overall mark with the same 1-1 mark in the L-L. The season opened with back-to-back wins over Gettysburg and Cocalico, earning the Buckskins the title in their own tip-off tournament. CV was unable to replicate that success at the Eastern York Holiday Tournament, earning a spot in the title game with an 82-77 double-overtime win over Spring Grove. Their championship hopes were dashed with a 69-61 loss to Eastern York in that title game.
CV opened the 2023 portion of their schedule by hosting Penn Manor on January 3rd. The Comets used 25 points from Ethan Benne to leave Witmer with a 57-49 victory. Griffen Rishell fell just shy of game high honors, finishing with 24 points in the loss.
GIRLS' BASKETBALL
The girls' basketball team has logged 11 games so far, going 2-9 with a 1-1 mark in league games. The lone league victory came on December 16th when CV topped Solanco by a 62-45 final. The Lady 'Bucks' other win came on December 29th in the consolation game of the Northeastern Holiday Tournament with CV slipping by East Pennsboro, 39-36. Gabrielle Moore (nine points) and Rhiannon Henry (eight points) led the way with Erin Figart chipping in with seven points.
Conestoga Valley returned to Lancaster-Lebanon League action to kick off the new year, falling to Penn Manor by a 28-22 final on January 3rd. Henry posted a team high eight points in a game the Lady Buckskins were in until a 10-5 Penn Manor run through the final frame.
WRESTLING
The wrestling team has split their time between standard dual matches and big tournaments as the seasons unfolds. The Buckskins were victorious in all four dual matches, knocking off Penn Manor (44-28), Solanco (37-31), Warwick (50-21) and most recently Cedar Crest by a 71-0 final.
The shut out of Cedar Crest happened on January 4th and featured just two forfeits. Mathew Lopez (285) and Nick Horton (107) enjoyed the two easy wins in the middle of the match. The bulk of CV's points came from their seven pinfall victories starting with Miles Acosta (152) and Luke Needham (160). Melvin Stoltzfoos (189) and Zander Rider (215) followed by Townsen Bagley (121), Luke Morley (127) and Bryce Bowman (133) rounding out the group. Abdoul Akala (172) and Omar Vargas (114) posted tech fall wins while Andrew Stoltzfoos claimed the last bonus point win with his major decision at 145. Teagan Ruble picked up the win at 139 with a 7-3 final.
CV opened the season with a 12th place finish at the Williamsport Top Hat Tournament on December 2nd and 3rd, added a third-place finish at the Carlisle Classic on December 16th and 17th and wrapped up their big match stretch with a 14th place finish at their own Neil Turner Memorial Holiday Classic on the 28th and 29th.
SWIMMING
The swim teams have spent the early part of the season swimming against the tide. That has led the Lady Buckskins to a 0-2 mark with losses to Warwick and McCaskey. The boys' team managed a 94-45 over the Red Tornado but fell to Warwick by a slim 79-70 final.
In the win against McCaskey, CV won nine of 11 events, including all three relays, with Connor Ludwig taking both the 100 butterfly and the 200 free and Daniel Ivanchikov adding top times in the 50 free and 100 back. J. Sayers added the best 500 free and Aidan Campbell took the 100 breaststroke. Ludwig, Ivanchikov and Campbell each swam on two winning relay teams.
BOWLING
Over in the bowling alleys the Buckskins sit at 1-4 as the calendar flips to 2023. CV's lone win came over McCaskey with losses to Hempfield and Elizabethtown before and to Warwick and Ephrata after.
Against McCaskey, Ryan Muckle rolled a 223 in the second game and finished with a 608 series to lead the Bucks.
RIFLE
The rifle season started well with a 488-487 win over Manheim Township on December 13th but losses to Wilson (489-488), Governor Mifflin (492-486) and Ephrata (498-489) dropped the Buckskins to 1-3 on the season.
Meghan Smith fired a 99 to lead the Bucks over the Streaks. Dominick Santamaria and S. Land both followed with 98s while William Roland hit 97 and Hunter Kleckner rounded out with a 96.
In the nine point loss to Ephrata, Santamaria and Lydia Salmons both hit 99s with Kleckner close behind at 98 while the Mounts top four marksmen fired 100s.
