Donegal Tennis Goes 1-1 in PIAA Playoffs
After placing third in the District III tournament, Donegal boy's tennis entered the PIAA State tournament and battled to a first-round win over Central Columbia on May 18th in Williamsport before bowing out in the quarterfinals in a 3-0 loss to Masterman School of Philadelphia.
Donegal swept the singles matches to earn a 3-2 triumph over Central Columbia with victories coming from Luke Yunginger, Akilan Murugesan, and Evan Stehman.
Murugesan and Stehman were the first two points to come in for the Indians, easily overcoming their opponents in straight sets.
"Akilan Murugesan and Evan Stehman both won in straight sets at love. This is extremely uncommon at the state level," pointed out head coach Trent Hoffmaster. "The two of them just continued their wonderful season long performance."
The third Donegal point came from Luke Yunginger, playing at No. 1 singles. Yunginger battled back from being down a game to force a tiebreaker in the first set, and even after dropping four consecutive points, Yunginger retaliated to take four straight points and tie the match again.
A series of three straight successful points allowed Yunginger to claim set one, followed by a four-game win streak to clinch the second set.
"This was time for Luke to shine," credited the coach. "He rattled off four straight games to win and help the team advance to the state quarterfinals. It was a career defining singles win."
After the momentous victory, the Tribe advanced to the quarterfinal round for just the third time in Donegal boys' tennis history. In the May 21st matchup held at Hershey Racquet Club, the Indians slipped 3-0 to Masterman who went on to take second in the tournament.
"A fantastic season from start to finish," Hoffmaster summarized. "We competed in one of the hardest AA sections in the state and met each challenge and were able to make it to the highest level possible."

After an incredible 15-3 regular season, the Section III champs were dealt a tough blow in the post-season and were unable to participate in the L-L League tournament due to quarantine guidelines.
Despite the disappointment, the Lady Indians once again demonstrated their depth of skill and character and capitalized on their first opportunity back on the field, registering a 6-2 win over Greencastle-Antrim in round one of the PIAA District III Tournament.
Donegal hosted the May 25th matchup as the seventh seed and pulled away from 10th seeded Greencastle-Antrim with a five-run rally in the fourth frame.
Sophomore Cara Biesecker struck out two while earning the win in the circle, her 14th of the season, while also leading the team at the plate with two hits and two RBIs.
Kara Heidlauf pumped up the offensive momentum with her second inning homerun before a series of strong at bats in the fourth garnered the remaining five Donegal runs.
"I thought the difference in the game was our defensive play and our timely hitting," pointed out head coach Wayne Emenheiser.
Emma Garber kickstarted the fourth inning rally with a double on a 1-0 count, followed by Emma Miller and Esther Myers who loaded the bases with a bunt single and a walk, respectively.
Biesecker came up to bat next and a well-placed single scored two for the Tribe, while Aysha Gibbs, Bella Mackison, and Madeline Gohn continued the sequence to bring home three more runs.
The steady Indians defense got the job done with just a single error in the victory.
