E-town softball topples L-S, Lebanon and CV

It has not been confirmed if the Lady Bears did indeed have a chicken dinner but they put three straight wins under their belt so there was ample opportunity to do so.

The juiciest of those wins came on April 10th in a slug fest with Lampeter-Strasburg that went to E-town by a 14-13 final. The game appeared to be in hand after Elizabethtown's eight run burst in the third made it a 9-1 affair or even after the Lady Bears plated two more in the fourth for an 11-1 cushion. The Lady Pioneers had other ideas and used a 12-run top of the fifth to jump ahead 13-11.

E-town, behind Keira Davis's RBI double and Sophia Finch's two-run shot, answered in the bottom half of the frame to regain the lead 14-13. Numerous grey hairs sprouted in the stands as Cassidy Leitzel worked to cover the final six outs and secure the win which she did. Breonna Edgell lost her shot at the win when Leitzel provided relief with one out in the top of the fifth. Both Finch and Davis finished with three RBI while Leitzel and Carli Zerphey added two RBI apiece.

The Lady Bears needed only five innings to skate past Lebanon by a 13-3 final on the 5th. Bailey Grinnell earned the win with Edgell closing things out. The pair combined for two strikeouts and two walks. Leitzel drove in two runs, but it was Astyn Calaman leading the way with three hits and three RBI that included a two-run homerun in the fifth. Chloe Wilkinson added two RBI on four hits.

Elizabethtown made it an official winning streak by topping Conestoga Valley 4-1 on the 12th. Edgell covered all seven innings, allowing just one unearned run while striking out four and walking three. The Lady Bears benefited from five Lady Buckskin errors but Wilkinson and Kiera Davis both managed one RBI.

CORRECTION In last week's edition Miranda Davis was incorrectly given credit for three RBI and three hits in the win over Lower Dauphin. Keira Davis was the player with three RBI and three hits.

TRACK

April 11th sent the Bears track team to Quarryville to battle Solanco. The result was a 77-73 heartbreaker for the boys and a 96-54 setback for the girls.

Despite the team loss, the boys opened and closed the meet with wins. Maxwell Gerhart, Merlo, David Shephard, and Dante Checco opened with a win in the 3200m relay while Jason Stark, Djemba N'Dikwe, Owen Dommel and Juan Lopez closed things out with a 1600m relay win. Between those wins were just six other victories with Caleb Fuge accounting for two with his 110H and 300H wins. Lopez went solo for a 400m victory while Dommel did the same in the 200m. Jackson Kay (800m) and Jaycen Conrad (1600m) were also winners.

The girls had the same opening and closing wins as the boys but posted just five other victories on the day. Liah Drager, Kendall Hein, Haley DeStefano, and Ellia Spang were responsible for the opening 3200m relay win while Drager, Ali Fink, Audrianna Resetar and Genna McDonald closed the meet with a 1600m relay win. Fink picked up two of the five solo wins, taking the 1600m and 800m races. Jordan DiRisio claimed the 3200m and McDonald the 400m for the final wins on the track. Noreen Lehman earned the lone field victory, topping the javelin field.

VOLLEYBALL

A holiday induced light stretch for the boys' volleyball team included just a lone match opposite Lebanon on the 11th. The Bears picked up the easy win, posting scores of 25-13, 25-13 and 25-14 thanks to eight kills from both Cooper Torborg and Josh McCoy. Torborg added four blocks while Eli Miller had 37 assists, Austin Thomas three aces and Adam Reedy one dig.

TENNIS

With the end of the boys' tennis season in sight the Bears are searching for additional wins. Losses to Mechanicsburg, McCaskey and Lampeter-Strasburg dropped E-town to 5-6 with just two dates remaining. The loss to Mechanicsburg on the 6th and McCaskey on the 10th were by the same 5-0 final with Luke Risser picking up the lone win in the 6-1 loss to L-S.

BOYS' LACROSSE

The 2023 season continues to be a struggle for the boy's lacrosse team with losses to Cocalico, Bishop McDevitt and Lampeter-Strasburg keeping the Bears winless on the season.

E-town fell to Cocalico on April 5th by a 23-3 count with 15 Josiah Erb saves not nearly enough to stem the Eagle surge. Holden Haver netted two of the three goals with Carson NyeSmith nabbing the other.

E-town hosted McDevitt on the 10th. The Crusaders left with a 7-3 win. This time it was Elijah Poulos posting the two-goal game while Haver accounted for the final score. Erb finished with seven saves.

The Bears invited Lampeter-Strasburg to play on the 11th with the Pioneers posting a 15-2 victory before leaving town. Erb split time in goal with AJ Bush with the duo combining for nine saves, five by Erb. Christian Robinson and Dylan Ginder split the offense in the loss.

GIRLS' LACROSSE

The Lady Bears' lacrosse team was able to avoid their own three-game slide thanks to their 13-6 win over McDevitt on the 10th. E-town used an 8-2 second half push to pull away. Dani Bruno led the way with six goals with Moira Shott and Callie Love-Morris adding two each. Aiesha Rios, Piper Patrick, and Charley Lengel-Kramer split the remaining three scores. Sydney Pope needed seven saves to secure the win.

The Lady Bears may have exited the holiday break with a win, but they were not able to enter the break in the same way after falling to Cocalico by a 13-9 final on the 5th. This time Pope's seven saves were not enough to keep E-town on top. Josie Spayd and Love-Morris netted two scores each with Patrick, Shott, Rios, Joy NgaFua, and Isabelle Bailey picking up one each apiece.

Things were not as close in E-town April 11th loss with the Lady Bears falling to Lampeter-Strasburg by a 17-5 final. Bruno regained her top scoring spot with four lamp lighters with Love-Morris tacking on the final score. Pope finished with four saves.

BASEBALL

The baseball team forged their second three-game winning streak of the season adding wins over Lampeter-Strasburg and Conestoga Valley to their Lebanon victory and now sit 6-2 overall.

Offense was hard to find in E-town's 2-0 win over the Pioneers on the 10th with the two sides combining for two runs and five hits. Thankfully, the Bears had three of those hits with Braden Cummings' second inning single driving in a run. Luis Perez accounted for the other run, drawing a bases loaded walk. Isaiah Shayter covered the initial six innings to earn the win while Pike Burkett kept the shutout intact with a scoreless seventh.

Elizabethtown returned home for their April 12th battle with Conestoga Valley, sending the Buckskins packing after a 7-2 victory. This time it was Kaden Kimble going six innings to pick up the win with Evan Hassinger covering the final three outs. Burkett and Josh Rudy each finished with one hit and two RBI to pace the offense.
