E-town teams struggle in District 3 playoffs
One and done might be an OK phrase when talking about college basketball and the NBA but if your attention is turned to the world of high school sports and the playoffs that come with them, it is not a phrase you want to hear. Need proof, look no further than Elizabethtown High School...the Bears placed three different teams into the postseason only to have all three falter in their opening round contests.
The first of those came on the baseball diamond where E-town dropped their District 3-5A first round game to Warwick on May 19th by a 6-1 final. The Bears enjoyed a 1-0 lead thanks to Kaden Kimble's first inning RBI single, but it was all Warriors from there. They knotted the game in the top of the second and moved ahead for good with a three run fourth. Add in the two run fifth and you get the 6-1 final.
Isaiah Shayter took the loss after covering the opening four and one third innings. He was hit with all six Warwick runs, although just two were earned thanks to three E-town errors. Kimble finished the pitching, adding two walks and three strikeouts to Shayter's five walks and two strikeouts. Shayter did have two hits at the plate, but Elizabethtown managed only three other hits - Kimble's first inning single as well as singles by Noah Locke and Cade Capello.
SOFTBALL
The softball team was up next, dropping their District 3-5A first round affair to Mechanicsburg by a 14-0 final on the 22nd. The contest lasted only five innings thanks largely to the Lady Wildcats 12-run second inning. Add in single runs in the first and third and the 10-run rule kicked in after E-town at-bats in the top of the fifth.
Breonna Edgell pitched the initial two frames and took the loss. Cassidy Leitzel and Savannah Bradley also saw action in the circle for the Lady Bears.
VOLLEYBALL
Elizabethtown's final district playoff participant saw their season come to a close on the 23rd. It was there that the Bear volleyball team fell to Northeastern by a 3-0 final. The 25-14, 25-19 and 25-13 finals.
"There's a reason they are top 5 in the state," said head coach David Hoffmann. "Fahnestock has his team ready to play anybody and they are going to be contenders for the district and state title. We did our homework on film and in practice, but we caught Northeastern at a time where they needed to get their season back on track."
Eli Miller, one of E-town's two second team Section Two All-Star members, dished out 14 assists with fellow second teamer Josh McCoy recording five kills. Cooper Torborg, the lone Bear on the First Team All-Star squad had one ace. Prabin Bhattarai matched that one ace while adding five digs. Finn McCoy tacked on two blocks.
TRACK
The track and field season came to a close on May 19th and 20th for all but one Elizabethtown athlete. That one athlete is Anna Rank who took part in the District 3-3A pole vault, clearing 12' to take home bronze and earn a return trip to Shippensburg University for the PIAA meet.
The Bears had a few near misses in Shippensburg with Juan Lopez, Felicia Morris and Noreen Lehman all finishing 11th in their respective events. Lopez did his work in the 400m where he posted a 50.61. Morris picked up her 11th place finish after covering 35' 2.5" in the triple jump while Lehman's 11th place finish came in the javelin thanks to a 114' 7" throw.
Ali Fink and Jordan DiRisio both took part in the 1600m where Fink finished 13th with a 5:18.21 and DiRisio 17th with a 5:24.45. DiRisio added an 18th place run in the 3200m to her weekend.
For the boys, the final district entry came from the 1600m relay team of Owen Dommel, Jason Stark, Djemba N'Dikwe and Lopez who finished 15th with a 3:34.26.
