TRACK
If you are familiar with the high school track and field calendar you know that May brings postseason meets to the forefront. For Elizabethtown that all starts with a trip to Hempfield for the L-L Championship Meet, held this year on May 13th and 14th. The boy's team finished the two-day affair in a three-way tie for 12th with Conestoga Valley and Solanco, with all three teams collecting 19 team points. The Lady Bears collected 19.5 points which placed them 14th on the girl's side.
Carlton Wise fronted the boy's finish by winning gold in the pole vault with Chaz Mowrer joining him on the podium with a seventh-place finish. The Bears nearly had two finishers on the 400m podium but Taidou N'Dikwe just missed, finishing in ninth place. Juan Lopez did not miss, finishing sixth with a 51.42. The 400m relay team of Ryan Ruth, Lopez, Zack Verghese and Owen Dommel added a sixth-place finish of their own while Brendan Rilatt added an eighth place in the discus.
Genna McDonald was the star for the Lady Bears posting two solo podium finishes while also taking part in the 400m relay that finished fourth. Felicia Morris, Adyson Haak and Lily Heistand joined McDonald in the 400m relay while her solo podium trips came in the 100m and 200m where she finished sixth and fifth, respectively. Anna Rank added the final solo medal, taking sixth in the pole vault. Jillian Wivell, Kendall Hein, Lilah Drager and Olivia Shenk capped the podium finishes with a fifth place run in the 3200m relay.
VOLLEYBALL
The boys' volleyball team was hit with a double surprise following their season ending loss to Lancaster Mennonite on the 11th. Not only did the loss put the Bears at 11-8 overall, but it also dropped them to 15th in the final District 3-3A rankings, a mere 0.000333 behind State College for the final postseason berth.
The second surprise came before the Mennonite game when head coach Lamar Fahnestock announced he was stepping down.
"After much thought and changing my mind more times than I can count, I decided it was the best decision," said Fahnestock. "I have poured my heart, soul, and much more into every team I have coached over the last 27 years. I leave having coached 22+ different teams of boys and girls at every level from middle school to club to college with the bulk being as a boy's HS coach.
"I can truly say I have loved every player I coached and will most definitely miss the chance to positively influence young athletes. However, it is time for me to take a breath."
As for his final game on the sidelines, it ended up being 3-1 loss to Lancaster Mennonite with the Blazers posting wins of 25-22, 25-22 and 25-15 to top E-town's 25-17 game three victory. Billy O'Connell dished out 22 assists while Dylan Shepherd finished with 18 digs. Bryan Murry, the lone Bear on the All-Section Team, with his second team nod, finished in a tie with Eli Miller and Damian Tobias for team high in aces with one. Tobias added 14 kills to his line.
