Family In Need After Fire
On March 12, the McCullough family members were making dinner in their home in Providence Township. Denise asked her son, Logan, to heat oil on the stove for fries. She then went outside to help her husband, David, in the yard. After turning on the stovetop, Logan went into the bathroom to take a bath. Without anyone knowing, the oil caught fire. David came back to the house, and when he walked through the front door, he saw the kitchen clouded in smoke and covered by flames. Their dog, Katie, was sitting on the basement steps barking at the door to the bathroom where Logan was. David ran through the flames and carried his son outside to safety.
Today, Denise, David, Logan, and Katie are making do with what they have. The kitchen was destroyed and there is water damage throughout the house. The roof, windows, and flooring need to be replaced. On April 22, the electric was turned on and the bathroom was cleaned. The family's only source of running water is in the bathroom; Denise has been washing dishes in the bathtub.
The McCullough family's neighbors have been very supportive. "We provided meals for them for the whole month of April because they had no way to cook," said Joanne Diedrich. "This neighborhood is like a family."
David purchased discounted appliances and cabinets from Lowe's and was also to receive a new door. The McCulloughs have been living in their basement because the upstairs is unlivable. David and Denise have their own room while Logan has been sleeping on the couch.
"We really want to drum up support for this family," said Diedrich. "They've done so much for others and deserve some assistance." Over the years, the McCullough family has provided room and board to teenagers who needed a place to stay. "One of the kids made us a sign that says, 'McCullough halfway house,'" said David. "Pretty much every single one who went through here left better than when they entered."
