Girls' Lacrosse Scores 99 Goals in First 7 Games

After six straight wins, CV girl's lacrosse suffered their first loss, a 10-9 heartbreaker against Warwick on April 12th.

The Monday night clash featured a 5-4 CV advantage at the half, but the momentum shifted with a 6-4 second half in Warwick's favor. The Lady Bucks dominated possession registering 23 shots on goal, compared to Warwick's 15, but the Warriors managed to edge ahead.

Abigail Morley netted six CV goals, Ellie Livingston had two, and Jessica Chen added one. Buckskin keeper Jamie Handwerger was credited with six saves.

Despite the setback, CV continues to rack up the triumphs having netted a staggering 99 goals against their opponents over the first seven contests, while allowing just 42.

Twelve different Lady Bucks have contributed to that goal count, with senior Morley leading the charge with 49 goals and nine assists.

"Abby Morley only knows how to give 110 percent on the field," noted head coach Matthew Brubaker of the co-captain. "Her on-field ability and effort are unmatched, and her younger teammates see where hard work and dedication can take them. She encourages her teammates to take the next step(s) in their development as lacrosse players."

While Morley is setting the offensive pace, she is certainly not the only success story on the team, and in a recent 17-1 win over Muhlenberg, showed just how diversified their attack can be, with goals supplied by 11 different Buckskins.

Jessica Chen led the April 10th attack with three goals. Ellie Livingston, Annika Bredeman, Sophia Hess, and Danae Ulrich each added a pair, and Morley, Bella Silvaggio, Olivia Hess, Amanda Yingling, Cassandra Malles, and Bailey Post-Raeburn chipped in with one apiece.

In a Friday night showdown against Garden Spot, CV prevailed 18-5 in which Morley notched nine goals, Livingston netted five, Silvaggio two, and one each from Yingling and Bredeman.

With steadfast protection of the CV goal, Handwerger has earned a collection of 47 saves this season, with assistance from a tight defensive unit anchored by senior Olivia Hess.

"Olivia is the leader of our defensive unit," credited Brubaker while describing an otherwise young and talented lineup of defenders. "The seniors learn to trust the underclassmen a little more each day. The underclass players continue to grow and are starting to accept the added responsibilities of playing with experienced players and playing for a competitive team."

While the impressive stats clearly point out the prowess of the CV squad, some players put in contributions that aren't as easy to see on the stat sheet, yet make all the difference to the team's success, and Coach Brubaker is quick to point out those efforts.

"Amanda Yingling works hard from start to finish and rarely comes off the field. She can play any position and makes great decision no matter what role she's playing," the coach noted of the senior and co-captain.

And while things look bright for the current season, there is plenty of potential for subsequent seasons as well, as evidenced in the likes of sophomore Caroline Kulp, playing in her first year of varsity lacrosse and already contributing in big ways.

"Caroline is a starting defender and she's only at a fraction her potential. She brings an understanding of strategy, positioning, and movement that is impossible to teach," praised Brubaker.

BOYS' LACROSSE

Boys' lacrosse is also gaining traction as they dive into the heart of the season, winning four of their last five contests for an overall record of 6-3.

Wednesday night featured a rematch against Lampeter-Strasburg, this time on CV turf and this time it was the Pioneers who got the upper hand 13-11. Seven days earlier the teams had clashed at L-S with the Bucks prevailing 11-10 in the final minutes.

L-S established a 10-2 lead before the half, but the Bucks came back strong scoring nine in the second half, but not enough to erase the deficit. CV goals were provided by Zach Fisher (4), Hunter Silvaggio (3), Jeff Fisher (2), and one each from Keller Dillman and Nate Heck.

On Monday it was Cocalico who succumbed to the Bucks 14-6.

J. Fisher and Dillman paced the attack with four goals apiece, and Zach Fisher (3), Hunter Silvaggio (2), and Tyson Zwaska (1) supplied the rest.

Soren Stoltzfus was defending the goal for CV, gathering three saves.

The previous weekend held back-to-back successes as CV bested Muhlenberg 19-3 and outlasted Garden Spot 10-6.

Against Muhlenburg J. Fisher topped the goal count with five, Z. Fisher had four, Dillman and Heck had three, Silvaggio two, and one apiece from Kyle Jankowski and Brady Kistler.

J. Fisher once again paced the offense against Garden Spot, scoring four. Dillman supplied two, and Conrad Dillman, Z. Fisher, Silvaggio, and Heck netted one.

CV keeper Benjamin Nolt secured a combined 19 saves.

VOLLEYBALL

CV volleyball swept their way past McCaskey and Cedar Crest as they ready themselves to take on some top challengers in the race to the Section One crown.

Wednesday the Bucks hosted Cedar Crest and ran away with a three-game victory (25-13, 25-9, 25-15) despite missing a few of their athletes due to injury.

Jayden Rice stepped up to lead the attack, firing 11 kills boosted by Dominic Brabant's 23 assists. Brabant and Luke Snader each dished a pair of aces.

Kenji Pha's defensive presence contributed eight digs and Rice came up big with four blocks.

On April 8th, CV blanked McCaskey in three quick sets (25-14, 25-15, 25-20).

Sawyer Shertzer powered 20 kills, while Brabant supplied 33 assists and matched Pha with five digs apiece.

Adam Yoder led the team in aces with two and Camden Clapper enhanced the defense with a pair of blocks.

SOFTBALL

Lady Bucks softball got their momentum churning a little too late in an 8-2 loss to Penn Manor last Wednesday, scoring both their runs in the sixth inning.

Becca Hartranft's RBI triple put the Buckskins on the scoreboard and Lexi Weitzel followed up with a single that scored Hartranft.

Weitzel also pitched three and two-thirds innings, scattering eight hits, eight runs, and three strikeouts.

Two days prior, the club celebrated their first win of the season with a 17-0 shutout at Lebanon.

Rhiannon Henry picked up the win from the circle, allowing zero runs and only one hit while striking out eight of the 11 batters she faced.

Leading the charge at the plate was Olivia Mellinger's two-for-two performance that included three RBIs. Becca Hartranft also had three RBIs.

TENNIS

Doubles play was a Buckskin strength in last Wednesday's 4-3 loss at Lampeter-Strasburg. Yuji Wenger and Henry McQuate Krahnke earned a point with their 9-8 victory. Nolan High and Luke Taylor gained another point with their win by the same score.

Wenger garnered the lone singles win with a 7-5, 7-6 triumph at No. 1.

On Monday, the squad blanked Warwick 5-0, with wins coming from Wenger, High, and Taylor in singles action. In doubles play, Jason Schlegelmilch and Ivan Shrom defeated their opponents and McQuate Krahnke and Nolan Miller also go the job done in straight sets.
